Biological Chemistry At Wellesley

erika sc

Wellesley calls its interdisciplinary program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology a major in Biological Chemistry.  The major includes courses in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Math and Physics that lead to understanding and training in biochemistry and in molecular and cell biology. Our students benefit from learning in small classes, from experiencing investigative lab experiences even in their introductory courses, and from a vast choice in undergraduate research collaborations with faculty in Biological Sciences and Chemistry.

The major began in 1966 as “Molecular Biology”; it is the most long lasting interdisciplinary major at Wellesley.  In 2006 and 2007 we honored the program by featuring a 40th Anniversary Celebration Lecture Series in Biological Chemistry that brought back alumnae to talk to majors and the College community about their careers and scholarly work.  In 2006 a 0.5 unit Capstone Seminar in Biological Chemistry (BISC 340) was added to the curriculum for seniors to discuss research of prominent scientists, ethical issues in research and student presentations of undergraduate research.

The major has been an increasingly popular major, as shown by the number of majors declared or graduated:

2008: 21 majors declared
2007: 20 majors declared
2006: 17 majors graduated
2005: 17 majors graduated
2004: 8 majors graduated
2003: 13 majors graduated
2002: 10 majors graduated
Total alumnae in the last 5 years: 65

Students in courses and research utilize all of the modern and state-of-the-art instruments and tools used in biological chemistry today. Wellesley College was among the first colleges to acquire an electron microscope and a confocal microscope.  Our most recent acquisitions include a DNA sequencer, a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer and a 400 MHz NMR spectrometer.  Examples of some of the student research projects using these instruments and others can be seen in Student Research.
