2009 SUMMER RESEARCH IN CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS

The Wellesley College Chemistry, Geoscience, and Physics Departments are pleased to announce that we have continued funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program for the summer of 2009. We have a limited number of positions available for well-qualified undergraduates from institutions other than Wellesley.

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM:

  • A student research project supervised by a Chemistry, Geoscience, or Physics Department faculty member
  • Weekly seminars given by academic and industrial scientists
  • One or two field trips to nearby research laboratories
  • Weekly meetings in which participants discuss their research progress
  • A final poster presentation at the end of the program

PROGRAM DATES:

June 8, 2009 - August 14, 2009

STIPEND:

The $4600 stipend includes a $1300 allotment for housing. Housing will be available on Wellesley College Campus. Arrangements can be made by contacting the Department of Residential Life (phone: 781-283-2679).

ELIGIBILITY: 

Applications for the Chemistry, Geoscience, and Physics REU program at Wellesley College from undergraduates from institutions other than Wellesley are limited to current sophomore and junior Chemistry/Biochemistry, Geoscience, and Physics majors. Wellesley students do not have to be Chemistry/Biochemistry, Geoscience, or Physics majors to apply for the REU program.  Exceptionally well-qualified rising Wellesley College sophomores will be considered. Under NSF-REU guidelines, only US citizens or permanent residents are eligible for support.

  • A personal statement. Any prior research experience should be noted.
  • An academic transcript

 

Non-Wellesley Students

Non-Wellesley students are required to submit:

  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty (two letters from science faculty)
  • A resume
  • A personal statement. Any prior research experience should be noted.
  • An academic transcript, scanned and sent electronically.
