A 1964 graduate of Wellesley College, Dr. Kolodny received a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969. From 1971 to 1972 she was a Research Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. From 1970 through 1972 Dr. Kolodny was a Radcliffe Institute Fellow.
Dr. Kolodny's work in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance and ocular disorders was supported by the American Diabetes Association, Lions Club International, and the National Eye Institute. In conjunction with Paula Rayman of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, she received a grant from the Sloan Foundation for research on factors that influence women to pursue careers in science. Other major awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1991 in support of her work on Magnetic Resonance Studies in Ocular Physiology, NSF grants with biology Professor Mary Allen and chemistry professor Adele Wolfson in support of their work on NMR studies of cyanobacteria, and NSF grants in support of Wellesley's purchase of state-of-the-art NMR and micro-MRI equipment. She is presently the Project Director of Wellesley's fifth grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She was awarded Wellesley College's Pinanski Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 1991.
Dr. Kolodny's professional appointments have included a position on the board of trustees of the New England Regional Computing Program, and memberships in the Admissions Testing Program (Chemistry Achievement Test Development Committee), The College Board; the Selection Panel for Faculty Development Awards, Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, as well as NSF and NIH review panels. She has also served as President of the Corporation of the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston, President of Congregation Shaarei Tefillah of Newton, MA, was a founding board member of the New Jewish High School of Greater Boston (Gann Academy), and is a member of the Board of the Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik Institute.
An active member of the Wellesley College community, Professor Kolodny has served on most of the major committees and was Co-Director of the Computer Literacy Project from 1976 to 1982, Faculty Director of the Science Center from 1974 to 1976 and 2002 to 2003, and was Dean of the Class of 1976 from 1972 to 1974. She is a member of Sigma Xi, the American Chemical Society, the American Society for Microbiology, and the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
