Major endogenous nitrogen stores of cyanobacteria:
  • Biliproteins (phycobiliproteins),
    such as phycocyanin (blue pigment)

    • Found in phycobilisomes of cyanobacteria and red algae
    • Blue accessory pigment attached to photosynthetic membranes
    • Accounts for up to 20% of proteins in cyanobacteria

  • Cyanophycin
    • a/k/a multi-L-arginyl-poly(L-aspartic acid),
      arg-poly(asp), or CGP
    • Found in cyanophycin granules
    • Unique (almost) to cyanobacteria
