Instructions to Use the Online Tutorial Software Required QuickTime 5.0 or later and Flash Player 6.0 or later are required to

installed on all public computers at Wellesley. If you need to install
them on your computer, you can download them.
This page will feature a QuickTime movie and a self-correcting quiz. The student will listen to the dialogue from the book by playing the QuickTime movie, and then answer multiple-choice questions about the dialogue. The form will correct itself and present the student with opportunities to try again if any of the answers are incorrect.
The vocabulary exercises are broken down into two parts for each lesson: Chinese-to-English and English-to-Chinese. When the student clicks on a link to one of these exercises, a SWF file will load and begin to play. For the Chinese-to-English component, the student will see five firecrackers shoot up into an evening sky background, each bearing a random vocabulary word from the lesson. Then, the student will hear a word being said, and have to click on the corresponding vocabulary word. If the student clicks on the correct word, the firecracker will explode, revealing the English translation of the vocabulary. Then, the student will hear audio for the next vocabulary word. If the student clicks on the incorrect word, the firecracker will simply blink, and the student will have to try again. When all five firecrackers on a page have exploded, five more will appear, until the student has gone through all of the vocabulary from that lesson. Each lesson will have characters from the previous lesson mixed in with the new lesson as review for the student. The English-to-Chinese section functions in the exact same way, except the object of the game here is to match the Chinese audio with the English translation of the vocabulary. When the student clicks on the correct translation, the firecracker will explode, revealing the Chinese vocabulary. When each lesson is completed, the student will have the option of restarting the lesson, returning to the Lessons page, or submitting her name. If she chooses to restart the lesson, the game will restart with the vocabulary displayed in a different order. If she chooses to submit her name, a new page will open with a form the student will have to fill out. The data from this form will be sent to a FirstClass conference, which the professor will check prior to each lecture. ** Note: Currently each lesson has a number of repeating characters. If there are two characters (or English definitions) that match a given sound, please click on both of these firecrackers. One of them will pop. You will hear the sound repeated in the group of characters and you can then click on the remaining firecracker.
When a student clicks on the Illustrative Sentences link, the student will be brought to a new page with frames. The left frame contains a list of all the vocabulary from that lesson. Clicking on the vocabulary in white will bring up a new page in the right-hand frame, which contains QuickTime movies. There is one movie per illustrative sentence. Each movie will allow students to read the sentence and hear it being spoken in Chinese at the same time. The student can navigate through the vocabulary of each lesson using the left frame, and once the student is done, return to the Lessons page.
This page will feature audio-only QuickTime tracks, which the student can listen to and follow along in her textbook. |
