Important information: Wellesley College has switched Anti-Spyware software from Ad-Aware SE Plus to the McAfee AntiSpyware module for VirusScan 8.5. It is recommended that you uninstall Ad-Aware SE Plus from your computer through the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel, then install the McAfee AntiSpyware Module from our documentation located here: http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/TVD/as85/
The following documentation is available only as a reference to using Ad-Aware SE Plus. The installers have been removed.
| While browsing the Internet, there is a high probability that you will run across "spyware" that can track your surfing habits, profile your shopping preferences, hijack your browser start page or pages, alter important system files, and install invasive software with or without your knowledge or permission. Spyware are also bundled with many free media players and peer-to-peer file-sharing applications, which allow third parties to monitor your Internet usage and send advertisements to your computer. Spyware poses a threat to your privacy, and can cause unnecessary network traffic. Legitimate software from major manufacturers, such as Microsoft Office, does not usually include spyware. To combat spyware, Wellesley College provides a licensed version of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE Plus to all students, faculty, and staff members for detection and removal of spyware from Windows computers. The Ad-Aware SE Plus software is for use only on College-owned computers and on computers owned by Wellesley College faculty, staff, and students. The following installation instructions are for computers with a working internet connection. For computers without an internet connect, borrow the VirusScan and Ad-Aware CD from the circulation desk at the Knapp Center or Science Library. A booklet is included with the CD with instructions on installing, configuring and running Ad-Aware SE Plus. |
To install Ad-Aware SE Plus for both on and off campus, please login to FirstClass and go to the Computing Questions > Anti Virus Updates conference and follow the directions in the Installing Ad-Aware SE Plus 1.06r1 for Windows message.
If you do not have internet access, you may check out a VirusScan CD from Knapp or the Science Library for up to three days.
Ad-Aware SE Plus does not continuously monitor your computer to prevent the installation of spyware; you must run Ad-Aware to detect and remove spyware after the spyware has been installed. It is recommended that you run Ad-Aware every week to remove spyware. NOTE: If you still have pop-up adware on your computer after running Ad-Aware, or your browser has been hijacked where the homepage has been reset, for additional help faculty and staff should contact the Helpdesk at x3333; students should fill out a ResNet Student Computing Help Form or go to Computing First Aid.
