Cross-Platform Backing Up |
The following instructions will guide you through the process of backing up (exporting) and restoring (importing) your browser bookmarks or favorites. The directions account for both cross-platform (one browser to another) and cross-platform (Windows and Macintosh) scenarios. Click on the link below that corresponds to your browser and platform:

1. Open Internet Explorer. Go to File and choose Import and Export.
2. The Import/Export Wizard will open up. Click Next.
3. Under Choose an action to perform, select Export Favorites.
4. Select which favorites you wish to back up. Click Next.
5. Under Export to a File or Address, select Browse.
6. Select the location in which you wish to save your favorites.
7. Under File name, type a name such as favorites.html. Make sure you save it as an .html file.
8. Click Next.
9. You have successfully exported your favorites. Click Finish and OK inthe Successfully exported favorites window.
1. Open Netscape. Go to Bookmarks and choose Manage Bookmarks.
2. In the Bookmarks Manager go to Tools and choose Export.
3. Select the location in which you wish to save your bookmarks.
4. Under File name, type a name such as bookmarks.html. Make sure you save it as an .html file.
5. Click on Save.
6. You have successfully exported your bookmarks.
1. Open Firefox. Go to Bookmarks and choose Manage Bookmarks.
2. In the Bookmarks Manager go to File and choose Export.
3. Select the location in which you wish to save your bookmarks.
4. Under File name, type a name such as bookmarks.html. Make sure you save it as an .html file.
5. Click on Save.
6. You have successfully exported your bookmarks.
Note: Please make sure you follow the instructions for your version of Safari. To find the version, launch Safari. From the Safari menu, choose AboutSafari.
Backing up Safari v.1 bookmarks for restoring in Safari v.1:
1. From the Desktop, double-click on the Macintosh HD andthen on Users.
2. Double click on your Home Folder, then Library, and finally Safari.
3. Locate the file Bookmarks.plist.
4. Hold the options key andclick and drag Bookmarks.plist to your back up media.
5. You have successfully exported your bookmarks for importing into Safari v.1.
Backing up Safari v.1 bookmarks for restoring in Safari v.2 or another browser:
1. Open Safari. Go to Bookmarks and choose ShowAll Bookmarks. Keep this window open for a later step.
2. Open another browser on your Mac, such as Netscape or Firefox.InternetExplorerisnotrecommended for this process.*
3. From Netscape or Firefox, go to Bookmarks and choose ManageBookmarks.
4. Click and drag your bookmarks from Safari to the bookmark manager of yourother browser. You should be able to drag entire folders as well, but you willonlybe able to drag one file or one folder at a time. This process effectively transfersyour bookmarks from Safari to a different browser since there is no export functionin Safari v.1.
5. Once you have arranged your bookmarks in Netscape or Firefox as desired, youhave successfully exported your Safari v.1 bookmarks.**
*If you would like to import Safari v.1 bookmarksinto Internet Explorer, please transfer your Safari v.1 bookmarks to Netscapeor Firefox as described above. Then export your bookmarks from Netscape or Firefox and import them into Internet Explorer.
**If you would like to import Safari v.1 bookmarks into Safari v.2 at this point, you will need to export your bookmarks in either Netscape or Firefox.
1. Open Safari. Go to File and choose Export Bookmarks.
2. Under Save as, type a name such as bookmarks.html. Make sureyou save it as an .html file.
3. Under Where, select the location in which you wish to save your bookmarks.
4. Click on Save.
5. You have successfully exported your bookmarks.

Note: If you have just installed Firefox for the first time, it will prompt you to import bookmarks from other browsers. Check the boxes that correspond to the browsers on your computer that currently contain bookmarks or favorites that you wish to import to Firefox. If you need to import more bookmarks later or if you have a bookmarks back up from another computer, usethe following instructions:
1. Open Firefox. Go to Bookmarks and choose Manage Bookmarks.
2. In the Bookmarks Manager go to File > Import.
3. The Import Wizard will open up. Under Import Bookmarks from, select From File. You can also select another browser on the list if that browser currently contains bookmarks or favorites that you wish to import to Firefox.
4. Click Next.
5. Find and select your bookmarks backup and then click Open.
6. You have successfully imported your bookmarks
Note: Please make sure you follow the instructions for your version of Safari. To find the version, launch Safari. From the Safari menu, choose AboutSafari.
Restoring bookmarks from Safari v.1 in Safari v.1:
Note: This process will delete all bookmarks currently in Safari.
1. Find and select the file called Bookmarks.plist that you have previously backed up.
2. From the Desktop, double-click on the Macintosh HD and then on Users.
3. Double click on your Home Folder, then Library, andfinally Safari.
4. From the Safari folder, drag the Bookmarks.plist file to the trash.
5. Drag your previously saved Bookmarks.plist to the Safari folder.
6. You have successfully imported your Safari v.1 bookmarks.
Restoring bookmarks from Netscape or Firefox into Safari v.1:
1. Open Safari. Go to Bookmarks and choose Show All Bookmarks. Keep this window open for a later step.
2. Open another browser on your Mac, such as Netscape or Firefox. Internet Explorerisnotrecommended for this process.*
3. From Netscape or Firefox, go to Bookmarks and choose ManageBookmarks.
4. Click and drag your bookmarks from Safari to the bookmark manager of yourother browser. You should be able to drag entire folders as well, but you willonly be able to drag one file or one folder at a time. This process effectivelytransfers your bookmarks from Safari to a different browser since there is noexport functionin Safari v.1.
5. Once you have arranged your bookmarks in Netscape or Firefox as desired, youhave successfully exported your Safari v.1 bookmarks.**
*If you would like to import bookmarks from Internet Explorer into Safari v.1, please import your Internet Explorer bookmarks to Netscape or Firefox first. Then export your bookmarks from Netscape or Firefox andimport them into Safari v.1 as described above.
