Uninstalling and Installing

Please make sure users uninstall older versions of FirstClass before installing FirstClass 9. For instructions:

Automatic Reply

With the July 2007 server upgrade, your auto-reply will be sent only once per day to each sender. This will help avoid bouncing auto-replies with another account. (We do still recommend not setting an auto-reply for Internet mail whenever possible because of the risk involved in replying to spam.) This change affects any version of First Class that the user may have.

Changes in Version 8.3 and higher

Back and Forward Buttons

There are now Back and Forward buttons that let you move among the objects you have previously opened, just as if you were using a web browser.

Note: this only works with objects opened through the Navigation Pane.

Trash Can

The desktop includes a trash can. Items you delete from your account will be stored in your trash can until the daily audit process purges them from the server. The audit begins at 3:00 AM and runs for several hours. While items are in still in the trash can you can remove (undelete) them. You will see this trash can in older versions of FirstClass, but will be unable to use it unless you upgrade to 8.3.

When you delete a message or file you will no longer be prompted to verify deletion, but you will be prompted once when deleting a folder or conference.

Note: Messages and files in conferences are not part of your account and will not go into your trash can if you delete them.

For more information, see the main documentation section on Deleting and Undeleting.

Deleting Unwanted Desktop Items (Calendar, Bookmarks, etc)

Desktop items such as Calendar, Bookmarks and Contacts can be deleted. However, if you delete them you will lose whatever was stored inside, so if you ever want the icons back, they will not contain any of the files you had before deletion.

If deleting is not working, the item could be protected. To unprotect it, click on the icon and go to File > Properties (on OS X, File > Get Info). Uncheck Protected. You should be able to delete the icon now.

Note: Conferences that have been created as part of the standard desktop for Wellesley FirstClass users are Official Announcements, System Notices, Wellesley Conferences, Computing Questions, Trash, and Instant Messaging. These can not be deleted. However, if you would like to hide these objects, you can. Simply click on the icon, then File > Properties (on OS X, File > Get Info) and under View choose Hidden.

Protecting Folders from Accidental Deletion

Select the folder and File > Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac) then check the box labeled Protected. The folder can only be deleted after unchecking the box.

Icons

FirstClass 8.3 introduced many new icons that are by default, larger than in previous versions. To change the appearance of your icons:

  1. View > Change View Properties.
  2. In the Sorting tab, the first field is Display format. Change this setting to Scaled icon.
  3. Click the Icons tab and drag the slider to choose an icon size. The number in the middle is the current selected size. (The default for the old FC icon sizes is 32, and for the new large size it is 64).

Rules

Some users can't edit their Spam Rules when they go to Mailbox > Collaborate > Rules. The Rules is either greyed out, or the buttons to create new rules are unavailable.

To access rules, go to Preferences > Messaging > Mailbox Rules.

Saving

There is no "Save As" option for individual messages or for summaries. This is now done as "Export Documents." The section Saving and Archiving Messages explains the details. Note that since version 8.1, you can now export several messages at once and their attachments will be saved automatically in a folder called Attachments.

Sounds (Turning Off the "Ding")

  1. Go Edit > Preferences (on OSX FirstClass > Preferences).
  2. Click on the Messaging tab.
  3. Click on the Audio sub-tab.
  4. In the Volume for built-in sounds, choose either Maximum, Loud, Medium, Soft, or Off.
  5. Click OK to apply and exit.

Timestamps on Messages

The default setting on 8.3 and higher may not include a timestamp when replying or forwarding an email. To include a timestamp and other information:

  1. Edit > Preferences.
  2. Click on the Messaging tab.
  3. Click on the Initial Content tab.
  4. Set Replying tagging to "Name and Timestamp." You can also choose "Include Header Summary" for Forward tagging in order to include the date, time, etc. when forwarding emails.
  5. Click OK to apply and exit.
