I Can't Print
- Click on the Printer Setup Utility in the dock. Check to see if Stopped is listed for the printer's Status. If so, double-click on the printer and click Start Jobs. If the printer doesn't resume printing, proceed to the next step.
- Verify that the printer is on, has the message Ready, and that the yellow ethernet cord is connected to the printer and the drop in the wall.Can others print? What are they trying to print?
- Power cycle the printer by turning it off, waiting 10 seconds, and turning it back on. If the user still can't print, proceed to the next step.
- Check the printer for the queue name taped to its side. It should have the format p-(3 letter location)-floor-letter, such as plib2j. If the user can't find the queue name, have them print a printer configuration page.If a valid queue name is not listed under Host Name, then findthe IPAddress.
- At the Help Desk - not the user: Go to Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal. At the command line, type ping IP address (or queue name). For example, ping plib2k.wellesley.edu.
If the printer is online you should see the lines below. Press control + C to stop the pinging and proceed to step 6. If you see Host is down instead of these reply message, the printers is offline. Press control + C to stop the pinging. Refer the log to Cable and include the printer's location and drop number.

- If the user never found the queue name earlier, in Terminal type host IP Address. The red text will contain the queue name.

Click the Printer Setup Utility in the dock. Click once on the printer to select it and click Delete. Add the printer again using the queue name and printer model. If the user still cannot print, refer the log to the Macintosh printing referral. Be sure to include the printer model, queue name, and the results of the steps you've taken to resolve the issue.
Checking Printer Model and Driver
- Click the Printer Setup Utility in the dock.
- Click once on the appropriate printer.
- Go to Printers > Show Info.
- Click on Name & Location in the window that appears and from the drop-down list, select Printer Model.
- The printer driver will be listed. It should be the same model as the actual printer.
Canceling a Print Job
- Click the Printer Setup Utility in the dock.
- Click once on the appropriate printer.
- Go to Printers > Show Jobs.
- Select the job you wish to delete and click Delete.
Duplex Printing
Setting up the duplex option for a printer:
- Click the Printer Setup Utility icon in the Dock.
- Click once on the printer you want to print duplex.
- Go to Printers > Show info
- Click the Names and Location pull-down menu and select Installable Options.
- Check Duplex Unit.
- Click Apply Changes .
Printing a double-sided document:
- Select File > Print to print a document.
- In the dialog box that appears, click on the Copies & Pages menu and select Layout .
- Under Two Sided Printing, check Long Edge Binding or Short Edge Binding .
- When you are finished selecting your print settings click Print .
To set this as a default:
- In the application the user wants to print from go to File > Print.
- In the window, click on Copies & Pages and a drop-down list will appear. Select Layout.
- Under Two Sided Printing, check Long Edge Binding or Short Edge Binding.
- Click on the Presets pull-down menu and select Save As. In the window, type a name, such as duplex, to name the settings that you are saving.
- Click OK.
- From now on, the printer will print duplex until the setting is changed.
To print single-sided again, click on the Presets pull-down menu and select Standard.
To change it back to duplex, click on the Presets pull-down menu and select the name of the settings you saved, for example duplex.
