To digitize an entire track from a CD:

This must be done with QuickTime Player Pro on a Mac. You can find QT Pro on the Macs in any of the public labs.

  1. Insert the CD into the CD-Rom drive of the Macintosh.
  2. The CD will automatically open in iTunes. Quit out of iTunes before continuing.
  3. Open Quicktime Player by going into the Macintosh HD > Applications> Quicktime Player.
  4. From the File menu, select Import.
  5. Find the track you would like to digitize and select it.
  6. Click on Open.
  7. From the File menu, select Save As.
  8. Name your file and add the .mov extension.
  9. Choose the location you would like to save your file in.
  10. At the bottom of the window, click on the radio button for Make movie self-contained.
  11. Click on Save.

 

To digitize parts of a track from a CD:

  1. Insert the CD into the CD-Rom drive of the Macintosh.
  2. The CD will automatically open in iTunes. Quit out of iTunes before continuing.
  3. Open Quicktime Player by going into the Macintosh HD > Applications> Quicktime Player.
  4. From the File menu, select Import.
  5. Find the track you would like to digitize and select it.
  6. Click on Open.
  7. Directly underneath the controller you will find two small triangles and to the left of the controller you will find time codes.
  8. Move the left triangle to the begining of the selection you want to keep. The time code will change to let you know where you are in the track.
  9. Move the right triangle to the end of the selection you want to keep. Again, the time code will change.
  10. Once you have specified the section of track you would like to keep, from the Edit menu, choose Trim.

    Note: You can also use this method to specify areas that you want to copy or cut. Both of these options are under the Edit menu as well.

  11. From the File menu, select Save As.
  12. Name your file and add the .mov extension.
  13. Choose the location you would like to save your file in.
  14. At the bottom of the window, click on the radio button for Make movie self-contained.
  15. Click on Save.
  16. You can also use Amadeus II to digitize bits of audio from a CD.
