To change iTunes4 MP3 Importing Bit Rate settings:

  1. Go to the iTunes menu and select Preferences...
  2. Under the Importing tab, select MP3 Encoder from the Import Using pull-down menu and view the settings in the Settings box. Click the appropriate links for specific setting instructions:

    stereo music
    mono music and spoken word

       

    • For stereo music:

      Select Good Quality (128 kbps) in the Setting pull-down menu.

      Click OK to close Preferences.

    • For mono music and spoken word:

      Select Custom in the Setting pull-down menu.

      The MP3 Encoder window will pop up. In order to achieve a 64 kbps bit rate at 44.100 kHz for mono audio, you'll need to select 128 kbps under Stereo Bit Rate, then 44.100 kHz for the Sample Rate, and Mono for Channels.

      Click OK to close the MP3 Encoder. To confirm that your settings have been changed, check the Details information in the Importing window. The setting details should be 64 kbps, 44.100 kHz, mono.



      Click OK to close Preferences.

To change where MP3s are saved:

  1. Go to the iTunes menu and select Preferences. Under the Advanced tab, you can find out where the MP3s are saved under Music Folder Location.



  2. To change it, click on Change...



  3. Go to where you would like to save the file and click on Choose.
  4. Click OK.



To convert a CD track into MP3:

  1. Insert an audio CD into your Mac. After a moment, the songs on the CD are listed in the iTunes window.
  2. Click to remove the checkmark next to any songs you don't want.



  3. Click on the Import button at the top right of the iTunes window to convert the checked CD tracks into MP3s.



  4. To cancel the imports, click on the small X () next to the progress bar. iTunes will play the songs as they're being imported. Click on the Pause button to stop it from playing; the import will continue. You can work with iTunes while songs are being imported.
  5. When all the songs have been imported, you can eject the CD.
  6. By default, the MP3s are placed in the Macintosh HD>Users>Current User indicated by the 'house' icon >Music> iTunes>iTunes Music folder.

To convert an aiff or wav file into an MP3 file:

You can also use iTunes to convert audio files on your hard disk from AIFF or WAV format to the MP3 format.

  1. Under the Source menu on your iTunes window, select Library.
  2. Drag the audio file into the song list window. It will be copied there. Click on the filename once to highlight it.
  3. From the Advanced menu, choose Convert to MP3 (or Convert Selection to MP3).
  4. By default, the MP3s are saved in the Macintosh HD>Users>Current User indicated by the 'house' icon >Music> iTunes>iTunes Music folder.
