Downloading Pictures from a Digital Camera to a PC

System Requirements

The USB xD Card Reader requires an operating system of Windows 2000 or higher. Windows NT does not support USB.

If you are downloading pictures on a PC which does not have a USB port or if you are using Windows 98, please use a PC in one of the computer labs on campus.

Downloading pictures to a PC with Windows XP

  1. Take the xD card out of the camera: Open the battery/xD card compartment cover, (see camera documentation for more details), and push the xD card slowly to eject the card from the camera.
  2. Remove the xD Card Reader's cover.
  3. Place the card reader so that the USB plug is on your right with the slot facing you (see pictures above). Insert the card into the xD Card Reader, gold side facing down. Find the moveable plastic piece next to the card slot and slide it in the direction of the arrows indicated on the diagram (see Figure I) to lock the card in place. The computer will not detect the xD card if is not locked.
  4. Connect the xD Card Reader to one of the computer's USB ports usually located on the back of the computer. The indicator light on the xD Card Reader should turn green when the card is properly connected.
  5. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop, then double-click on Removable Disk (G:)
  6. If Removable Disk (G:) does not appear in the My Computer window and you did not see any dialog box appear when you inserted the xD Card Reader, return to the windows desktop, right click on My Computer to pull up a context menu. Left click on Properties. Click on the Hardware tab-> Device Manager. Check for Universal Serial Bus Controller or the OLYMPUS MAUSB-100 USB Device.
    • If the USB Controller is there, try unplugging the USB cable and plugging it into the other USB port.
    • If it isn't there, please use a public lab computer to download pictures.
  7. A window will appear with a folder called DCIM inside it. Open the DCIM folder. Pictures are contained in a folder titled 100OLYMP.
  8. Drag the 100Olymp folder onto the desktop. In Windows 2000, this action may permanently remove the files from the removable disk.
  9. If the pictures were not automatically removed from the xD card, delete the pictures from the card after you have downloaded them. In the DCIM folder, choose Edit->Select all to select all the pictures in the 100Olymp folder, then go to File->Delete. When prompted, click 'yes' to delete all images.
  10. Make sure you empty the Recycle Bin on the Desktop!!
  11. When ready to disconnect the xD Card Reader from the computer, double click on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon, it is an icon with a green arrow usually found at the bottom right side of the toolbar. A window should appear with USB Mass Storage Device selected. Click Stop to confirm you want to stop running the Olympus MAUSB - 100 USB Device. Select OK and the safely remove hardware window will empty. When you see a dialogue box that says "The USB Mass Storage Device can now be safely removed from the system", disconnect the xD Card Reader from the USB port.
  12. Unlock the xD card by sliding the moveable piece away from the xD Card to enlarge the Card slot (see Figure II). Remove the xD Card from the reader by gently pulling out the card with two fingers and place it back into the camera slot.
