Downloading Pictures from a Digital Camera on a Mac

Where can I download Pictures?

In order to download pictures, you must be working on a computer that has digital camera software installed on it. Digital camera software is installed on Macs in all public labs. If you are not working in one of the labs and would like to install the software, please read Installing Digital Camera Software.

System Requirements

If you are installing this software on a personal computer, the USB SmartMedia card reader is compatible with Mac OS 8.1 or higher and any Mac with a USB port. Other requirements include: CD-ROM drive, at least 32 MB RAM, 75 MB free hard drive space, monitor with 256 Colors 640x480 or greater screen resolution. Apple iMac users should upgrade to USB supplement 1.1.

You will not be able to download pictures on a beige G3, a 8600, a 7300, or earlier. Please use a mac in one of the computer labs on campus.

Downloading Pictures on a Mac

  1. Connect the USB SmartMedia Card Reader to one of the computer's USB ports. These ports are located on the back of the computer, on the keyboard, or on the back of the monitor depending on which type of Mac you have. Any of these USB ports may be used.
    • If the computer gives a prompt saying the software needed for this driver is not installed, click OK. Unplug the USB SmartMedia Card Reader from the computer and follow the directions for Installing Digital Camera software on a Mac.
  2. Take the SmartMedia card out of the camera. Open the SmartMedia card compartment cover, usually found on the opposite side of the camera from the AC adapter (see camera documentation for more details), and gently remove the SmartMedia card with two fingers.
  3. Put the card into the SmartMedia Card Reader, gold side facing down.
  4. A USB SmartMedia icon should appear on the desktop a few seconds after the SmartMedia card is inserted. It should be called Unlabeled on OSX or untitled on OS 9. (Please do not rename the icon)
  5. Double-click on the Unlabeled icon.
  6. A window will appear with folders inside it. Downloaded pictures for all the cameras except the D620 zoom are contained in a folder titled, DCIM -> 100 Olymp. Pictures for the D620 zoom are in a folder titled, Imolym.
  7. Copy the files in the DCIM -> 100 Olymp or Imolym folder onto the desktop to download them. In OS9, you need to hold the option key down while dragging folders/files to the desktop in order for them to copy.
  8. Delete the pictures from the SmartMedia card once you have downloaded them. Return to the window for the Imolym or DCIM -> 100 Olymp folder. Go to the Edit menu and choose Select All. This will highlight all the files in the folder holding the pictures. Drag and drop the pictures into the trash.
  9. Make sure you empty the trash!!
  10. When you are finished deleting the pictures from the SmartMedia card, drag the Unlabeled icon to the trash. You will see a message informing you it is okay to remove the SmartMedia card from the reader.
  11. Remove the SmartMedia Card from the reader by gently pulling out the card with two fingers and place it back into the camera slot.
  12. Disconnect the SmartMedia Card Reader from the computer.
