Downloading Pictures from a Digital Camera to a PC
Where to find this software
In order to download pictures, you must be working on a computer that has
digital camera software installed on it. Digital camera software is installed
on PCs
in all public labs. If you are not working in one of these labs and would like
to install the software, please read Installing Digital
Camera Software.
System Requirements
The USB SmartMedia Card Reader requires Windows 98 or higher. Windows NT
does not support USB.
You will not be able to download pictures on a PC which does not have a USB
port. Please use a mac in one of the computer labs on campus.
Downloading pictures to a PC
- Connect the USB SmartMedia Card Reader to one of the computer's USB ports.
These ports are usually located on the back of the computer.
- When the card reader is connected, you may see the message "Building
new driver info. New Hardware found installing...". Proceed to step 3.
- If you see the following error message, "You do not have sufficient
security privileges to install devices on this computer...", try
plugging the SmartMedia Card Reader into the other USB port. If the error
persists, you will need to download the pictures either on a Mac or on
a PC where you have administrative privileges. When returning the digital
camera, please tell a Knapp staff member about the error and the location
of the PC on which it occurred.
- If the driver has never been setup on the computer you are using, an
Add New Hardware window will appear.
- When this window says "This wizard searches for new drivers for:
SCM eUSB SmartMedia," click Next.
- When you are asked, "What do you want Windows to do?" Check
the box next to "Search for best driver for your device" and
click Next.
- At the "Where Windows will search for the driver," check the
CD-ROM drive. Insert the CD titled Olympus into the CD-ROM drive.
Leave the location box checked. Click Next.
- When the driver has finished installing, click Finish.
- If the wizard can't find the driver, uncheck the box next to the CD-ROM
drive and instead check the one next to Specify Location.
- Click on the Browse button. Go to the CD drive. Select Win9x
drivers --> OK --> Next. Windows should now be able to find
the drivers.
- The computer may ask to restart after installing new drivers. Please
do so.
- Take the SmartMedia card out of the camera. Open the SmartMedia card
compartment cover, usually found on the opposite side of the camera from the
AC adapter (see camera documentation for more details), and gently remove
the SmartMedia card with two fingers. Put the card into the SmartMedia Card
Reader, gold side facing down
- Double-click My Computer and double-click on Removable Disk (F:)
If the Olympus USB Drive does not appear in the My Computer window
and you did not see any dialog boxes appear when you attached the SmartMedia
Card Reader, return to the windows desktop, right click on My
Computer to pull up a context menu. Left click on Properties
-> Device Manager. Check for USB controller.
- If it is there, try unplugging the USB cable and plugging it in to
the other USB port.
- if it isn't there, please use a public lab computer to download pictures.
- A window will appear with folders inside it. Downloaded pictures for all
the cameras except the D620 zoom are contained in a folder titled, DCIM
-> 100 Olymp. Pictures for the D620 zoom are in a folder titled, Imolym.
- Save your images by dragging them to the desktop.
- Delete the pictures from the SmartMedia card once
you have downloaded them. Return to the window titled Olympus USB Drive .
Choose
Edit>Select all to select all the pictures in the folder, then
go to File>Delete.
- Empty the Recycle Bin
on the Desktop!!
- When you are finished deleting the pictures from the
SmartMedia card and have emptied the Recycle Bin, remove
the SmartMedia Card from the reader by gently pulling out the card with two
fingers, and place it back into the camera slot.
- Disconnect the SmartMedia Card Reader from the computer.
NOTE: If you see the error message "Cannot find file 'C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\(the
picture name).JPG' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and
filename
are correct and that all the required libraries are available."
when you double click on a downloaded file to open it, try the following:
- Open Internet Explorer
- Go to the File menu and select Open
- Choose the downloaded picture file. It should be on your desktop or
in a folder you created on the desktop.
- Click OK
Internet Explorer should open the files without an error message.
