Cisco VPN for Admin Firewall Install Directions for Mac OS X
The following directions are for Wellesley College faculty and staff
to install the Cisco VPN software to access the Admin Firewall on a Mac OS X
computer which is connected to the Wellesley College campus network.
Installing the software
The install will take about 15 minutes to complete. Your network access
will be interrupted during the install, and you will need to restart your
computer once. Please save any documents you are working on and close all
programs except for this website.
Please print this website and refer to the printed directions after
Step 1 below.
- Download the Cisco VPN Installer to your desktop.
- If you are using Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3, download this file: cisco-vpn-4.7.dmg.
- If you are using Mac OS X 10.4 (Intel and PowerPC Macs), download this file: cisco-vpn-4.9.dmg.
-
When the download finishes you may close this window and refer to the
printed documentation. On your computer's desktop, double-click on the
cisco-vpn.dmg file, then open the Admin Firewall Installer
folder.
-
In the Admin Firewall Installer folder, double-click on the
Cisco VPN Client.mpkg file.
-
When the Authentication window appears (in OSX 10.2 it will appear first.
In OSX 10.3 it will appear right before the files are installed), login with
an Admin account and click OK.
-
In the Cisco VPN Client Installer window, click Continue.
-
In the Software Licenese Agreement window, click Continue, then
Agree to the popup window.
-
In the Select a Destination window, click on the drive you wish to install
onto (usually Macintosh HD) and click Continue.
-
In the Easy Install window, click Install or
Upgrade.
-
The Cisco VPN software will now be installed on your computer. When the
window says that the software was successfully installed, click
Close.
-
The install is now complete. Please continue to the next section to
configure the Admin Firewall settings.
Configuring the software
-
In the Finder menu, go to Go > Applications to find the
newly installed VPNClient application and double-click on it.
-
When it appears in the dock, click on the icon and hold until you see a
menu. When the menu pops up, select Keep In Dock to keep
it in your dock for easy access.
-
In the Cisco VPN window, click Import.
-
In the window that appears, scroll all the way to the left to the
Admin Firewall Installer folder. NOTE:The
profiles folder that is in the window when you first click Import is not the
one that has the Admin Firewall file.
-
Click on the Admin Firewall Install in the list of items.
-
Click on the Profiles folder in the second column, then
click on the AdminFirewall.pcf file in the third column
and click Open.
-
In the VPN Client window that appears, click OK.
-
When the Import window goes away, the VPN Client window should now have
AdminFirewall listed. In the VPN Client window, go to Options >
Simple Mode.
-
You may now drag the Admin Firewall Install folder to the trash, then drag
the cisco-vpn.dmg file to the trash as well.
-
The Cisco VPN Client is now configured properly. Please continue to the
next section to login to the Admin Firewall to access Administrative systems.
Logging into the Admin Firewall
Unlike the old Admin Firewall applications, with the Cisco VPN Client you
must keep the application open and stay logged in while you are using the
Administrative programs. If you quit the Cisco VPN Client you will be
disconnected from any Administrative system that requires the Admin Firewall.
-
If the VPNClient application is not open, launch it by clicking on the
icon in the Dock, or by going to Go > Applications and
double-clicking on VPNClient.
-
In the VPN Client window, Click Connect.
-
In the VPN Client popup window, login with your Domain Account and click
OK.
-
When you have successfully logged into the Cisco VPN Client, the Connect
button will change to Disconnect, and it will say Connected to
"AdminFirewall" in the Status Bar of the Cisco VPNClient window.
-
When the login is successful, you can hide the VPN Client window by going
to the menu VPNCLient > Hide VPNClient. To get back to the
Cisco VPN Client window, single-click on the icon in the
dock again.
-
If you do not login to Banner within 2 minutes, you will see the following
error message. Click OK. To login to the Admin Firewall
again, click on the VPNClient icon in the dock and click
Connect and login with your Domain Account.
-
When you are finished with any Administrative systems that you were using,
you may disconnect from the Cisco VPNClient by switching to the VPNClient
application and selecting VPNClient > Quit VPNClient.
When prompted to quit, click Disconnect and Exit.
