Cisco VPN for Admin Firewall Install Directions for Windows
The following directions are for Wellesley College faculty and staff
to install the Cisco VPN Client software to access the Administrative Firewall on a Windows
computer which is connected to the Wellesley College campus network.
Installing the software
The install will take about 15 minutes to complete. Your network
access will be interrupted during the install, and you will need
to restart your computer once. Please save any documents you are working
on and close all programs except for this website.
Please print this website and refer to the printed directions after
Step 1 below.
-
Click to download the
Cisco VPN Windows Installer. Select Save
and save it to your Windows Desktop.
-
Click to download the
Cisco VPN, Windows Firewall Configuration Script. Select Save
and save it to your Windows Desktop. You will need this for the Configuration
section later.
-
Double-click on the vpnclient.exe file that was
saved to your Windows desktop. When asked if you want to run this
file, click Run.
-
When the Installer window appears, click Yes.
-
Please be patient as it takes a few seconds for the installer to launch, and your
computer may not appear to be doing anything related to this install for a few
seconds.
-
If you recieve an error saying the VPN client is already installed, click
OK to cancel the install. The Cisco VPN Client is already
installed on the computer, so you don't need to continue with this intall.
You may delete the vpnclient.exe, vpnconfig.exe, and vpn folder on your Windows desktop.
-
If you recieve a different error, that mentions setup.ini, module, or other error not listed
above, please try running this InstallShield fix, then double-click on the cisco-vpn.exe installer
again.

Click to download the InstallShield Fix application.
-
Double-click on the InstallShieldFix.exe file to run the fix.
-
No dialog boxes will appear. Please wait 15 seconds, then double-click the
cisco-vpn.exe file attempt to install the Cisco VPN Client again. If you still recieve error
messages, please contact the HelpDesk at x3333. If the installer continues without the error
you recieved earlier, you may delete the InstallShieldFix.exe file.
-
You should now close this window and refer to the printed documentation.
It is very important that any programs that use the network (FirstClass, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) be closed at this time. If any of these programs are left open, it may cause the Cisco VPN Client installation to fail.
-
In the Cisco VPN Setup window, click Next.
-
In the Licenese Agreement window, select I accept the license agreement and click Next.
-
In the Destination Folder window, click Next.
-
In the Ready to Install the Application window, click Next.
|
Important Note: After clicking
Next, you will lose your network connection until the install
finishes. Any programs using the network, such
as FirstClass, will get disconnected and you will need to login
to them again. |
-
The Cisco VPN software will now be installed on your computer.
The installation may take up to 5 minutes to complete.
- When the install is near completion, you may be asked to restart the computer to complete the installation, click OK.
If you see this message, you will also see a failed installation message after clicking OK and the VPN Client will uninstall itself. If you left any programs running, please close them and try the install again. You do not need to restart your computer to attempt the install again.
- When the install is complete, click Finish.

- After you click Finish, you will be asked to restart your computer, click Yes.
Configuring the software
