Cisco VPN for Admin Firewall Install Directions for Windows

The following directions are for Wellesley College faculty and staff to install the Cisco VPN software to access the Admin Firewall on a Windows computer which is connected to the Wellesley College campus network.


Installing the software

The install will take about 15 minutes to complete. Your network access will be interrupted during the install, and you will need to restart your computer once. Please save any documents you are working on and close all programs except for this website.

Please print this website and refer to the printed directions after Step 1 below.


  1. Click to download the Cisco VPN Windows Installer. Select Save and save it to your Windows Desktop.

  2. Click to download the Cisco VPN, Windows Firewall Configure Script. Select Save and save it to your Windows Desktop. You will need this for the Configuration section later.

  3. Double-click on the cisco-vpn.exe file that was saved to your Windows desktop. When asked if you want to run this file, click Run.

  4. When the Admin Firewall Install window appears, click Yes.

  5. If you recieve an error saying the VPN client is already running or is already installed, click OK or No to cancel the install. The Cisco VPN Client is already installed on the computer, so you don't need to continue with the intall.

  6. If you recieve a different error, that mentions setup.ini, module, or other error not listed above, please try running this InstallShield fix, then double-click on the cisco-vpn.exe installer again.
  7. You may now close this window and refer to the printed documentation.

  8. In the Cisco VPN Setup window, click Next.

  9. In the Client Software Licenese Agreement window, click Yes.

  10. In the Destination Folder window, click Next.

  11. In the Program Folder window, click Next.

    Important Note: After clicking Next, you will lose your network connection until the install finishes. Any programs using the network, such as FirstClass, will get disconnected and you will need to login to them again.

  12. The Cisco VPN software will now be installed on your computer. The installation may take up to 5 minutes to complete.

  13. A Network Settings update message will appear. Please wait for the installer to update your Network Setings.

  14. A Network Adapter message will appear. Please wait for the installer to add the Cisco Network Adapter.

  15. When the install is complete, click Finish. Your computer will now restart. When it finishes restarting, please continue to the next section to Configure the Admin Firewall.

Configuring the software

  1. After the computer restarts and you login to Windows, double-click on the vpnfwconfig.exe file on your desktop that you downloaded earlier.

  2. In the dialog box that appears, click OK. Wait while the Configuring Firewall progress bar reaches 100%.

  3. In the Configuration Successful dialog box, click OK.

  4. Go to Start > All Programs > Cisco System VPN Client and click VPN Client to launch the Cisco VPN program.

  5. In the VPN Client window, go to Options > Simple Mode.

  6. You may now delete the cisco-vpn.exe and vpnfwconfig.exe files on your desktop.

  7. The Cisco VPN Client is now configured properly. Please continue to the next section to login to the Admin Firewall to access Administrative systems.

Logging into the Admin Firewall

Unlike the old Admin Firewall applications, with the Cisco VPN Client you must keep the application open and stay logged in while you are using the Administrative programs. If you quit the Cisco VPN Client you will be disconnected from any Administrative system that requires the Admin Firewall.

  1. If the VPN Client software is not open, go to Start > All Programs > Cisco System VPN Client and click VPN Client.

  2. In the VPN Client window, Click Connect.

  3. In the VPN Client popup window, login with your Domain Account and click OK.

  4. When the login is successful, the VPN client window will disappear, and a lock icon will appear in the system tray of your taskbar. You now have 2 minutes to login to Banner on the Web.

  5. If you do not login to Banner within 2 minutes, you will see the following error message. Click OK. To login to the Admin Firewall again, double-click on the lock in the system tray and click Connect and login with your Domain Account.

  6. You may also launch the Cisco VPN program and login by double-clicking on the Admin Firewall icon on your desktop.
