Cisco Clean Access Network Authentication

Clean Access helps keep the network safe and secure for everyone who uses the network, and for all the servers on the network that are maintained by Information Services. It protects the Wellesley College network as well as all of the computers connected to it by requiring each Windows and Macintosh computer connected to the Wellesley College network to install the Clean Access Agent and authenticate to gain network access. In addition, Windows computers must meet specific security checks to ensure that they remain protected and secure. For now, users on other types of network devices (i.e. Linux computers, game consoles, or PDAs) will only need to authenticate through a web browser to gain network access. Clean Access helps you keep your computer and others on the College network.

How do I log in?

For Microsoft Windows computers

If this is the first time you've attempted to access the Wellesley College network with your computer, your web browser will be redirected to a website that will ask you to log in with your Wellesley College Domain Account. Your Domain Account is the username and password you use to access faculty/staff office Windows computers, file servers such as NTM, and Computing Lab computers across campus. See the Frequently Asked Questions below if you do not remember your Domain Password. Once you have authenticated, you will be asked to install the Clean Access Agent. The Clean Access Agent will then install on your computer and run whenever your computer is on. When needed it will prompt you for your Domain Account to authenticate and verify that your computer meets the current system requirements to gain network access.

If you've accessed the Wellesley College network before, the Agent should be running in your system tray CCA Agent (you may need to show hidden icons to see all system tray icons).

If you see the icon in your system tray, right-click on the icon and choose Login. If Login is grayed out and you cannot select it, your computer does not have a working network connection. Reasons for this could be a disconnected ethernet cable or a hardware issue. Faculty and Staff should call the HelpDesk at x3333 and students should fill out a Student Computing Help Form for further assistance.

If you do not see the icon in your system tray, the Clean Access Agent may not be running or was never installed. If it is not running, please start the Agent by going to Start > All Programs > Cisco Systems > Cisco Clean Access > Clean Access Agent. Once the Agent has re-started, you will be prompted to log in. You can then close this page. If you cannot locate it on the Start Menu, please open a web browser to get redirected to the Clean Access website, log in with your Wellesley College Domain Account on the left, then follow the instructions on how to download and install the Clean Access Agent.

For Macintosh computers

If this is the first time you've attempted to access the Wellesley College network with your computer, your web browser will be redirected to a website that will ask you to log in with your Wellesley College Domain Account. Your Domain Account is the username and password you use to access file servers such as NTM and Computing Lab computers across campus.

If you've accessed the Wellesley College network before, the Agent should be running.

If you see the icon in the menu bar at the top right of your screen, you can check your network status as follows:
CCAClientGreenFullBar

    • CCAClientgreen - Green: You are successfully logged in to Wellesley's network.
    • CCAClientBrown - Brown: You are connected to the network, but you have not logged in using Clean Access. Click on the icon and choose Login.
    • CCAClientGrey - Grey: You are not connected to the network. You should check your network cable or make sure your wireless is turned on. Faculty and Staff should call the HelpDesk at x3333 and students should fill out a Student Computing Help Form for further assistance.

If you do not see the icon in the menu bar at the top right of your screen, you can check to see if it is installed. From the Desktop, double-click on Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Cisco Systems. Double-click on CCAAgent to launch it and log in. If you cannot locate it, please open a web browser to get redirected to the Clean Access website, log in with your Wellesley College Domain Account on the left, then follow the instructions on how to download and install the Clean Access Agent.

For non-Windows or Macintosh computers and other network devices

If you are using a computer or network device that is running anything other than Microsoft Windows (such as Linux, or a PDA), please open a web browser to get redirected to the Clean Access authentication page and log in with your Wellesley College Domain Account on the left. You will need to do this each time your computer loses network access because there is no client to prompt you to login when needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why do I have to authenticate to the network?

Authenticating to the network does two things: First, it allows Clean Access to make sure that your computer is safe and secure, which keeps the entire network secure. Second, it associates you with your computer. This allows Information Services to quickly and accurately pinpoint computers on campus that may be causing other problems. This will protect our network resources and also enable you to be notified more quickly if your own computer is compromised. In general, Network Authentication helps you keep your computer safe!
  2. Why does Clean Access ask me to log in several times in a row?

If your computer is connected to the network more than one way at a time, the Clean Access Agent might get confused as to which port the authentication request came in on and which port to send it out. Please only connect through either wired or wireless at any given time. You can either unplug your wired ethernet cable, or turn off wireless by a button, function key, or in Windows.
  3. When does my computer's authentication expire?

You will be required to authenticate to the network any time your computer has been asleep, powered off, or disconnected from the network for more than twenty (20) minutes at a time.
  4. Will I have to log in every time I want to use the Internet?

Not necessarily. If your computer has been on since the last time you authenticated, you will not need to do so again. Any time you do need to authenticate on a computer running Windows, the Clean Access Agent will prompt you for your password. Any time you need to authenticate on a computer running any other operating system, open a web browser and you will be re-directed to the login page.
  5. Which password do I use to authenticate?

Clean Access uses your Wellesley College Domain Account. If you have forgotten your Domain password, students can bring their Wellesley College OneCard to the Faculty/Staff Computing HelpDesk in Clapp Library between 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday; Faculty and Staff only need to call the HelpDesk if they need a new password. Your request will be sent to the accounts staff and your password will be reset and emailed to your FirstClass account (or you can leave additional contact information) by the end of the next business day.
  6. Does Network Authentication reconfigure, install software or place information on my computer?

Windows and Macintosh computers will be required to download and install a small piece of software called the Clean Access Agent. The Agent does two things:

    1. It will prompt you to log in when your computer needs to re-authenticate.
    2. For Windows computers, it periodically scans your computer to make sure that it meets the security requirements.
Computers running any other operating system will not need to install any additional software at this time.
  7. Does Network Authentication track what I do on the network?

No, Network Authentication only matches your computer with whomever is using it at the time. It doesn't log any other information about what you do while you are on the network. The Clean Access Agent matches your computer with whomever logged into the Agent, as well as checking to make sure you have the latest system requirements.
  8. What are the security requirements?

Security requirements differ based on a computer's operating system. Currently, Windows computers are required to have all Critical Windows Updates installed from Microsoft and be configured to download and install new critical updates automatically. In addition, Windows computers must have either McAfee or Norton/Symantec anti-virus products installed and updated with the latest virus definitions.
  9. My computer thinks all the updates are done, but Clean Access still won't let me on!

Your computer may have viruses or spyware that are preventing your computer from functioning properly. A lot of viruses and spyware will either trick windows into thinking it has all its updates done or disabling the ability to set protection settings, such as Automatic Windows Updates.
  10. How often is my computer checked?

The Clean Access Agent will check your Windows computer about once a week to ensure that it meets the security requirements.
  11. What about my game consoles, wireless access points, PDAs, or other device that uses the network?

If you have a device other than a computer that uses the network, please email compreg@wellesley.edu for assistance. These special network devices must be configured and/or registered with help from IS staff.

What if I need help?

Students may fill out a Student Computing Help Form or bring their laptop to Computing First Aid. Information is available at the ResNet Help website.

Faculty and staff may contact the Faculty/Staff Computing HelpDesk, Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm, at x3333 or visit the HelpDesk on the second floor of the Clapp Library above the Knapp Center. Please be aware that personal computer help is very limited as the HelpDesk deals mainly with College-owned computers.

Faculty, Staff, and Students may also post questions in the Computing Questions conference on your FirstClass desktop at any time, from another computer that has a full internet connection, such as a Computing Lab or ResHall Computing Room computer. Please be aware that the Computing Questions conference is not an official Information Services conference so you may not get a complete or quick answer, but there a lot of knowledgeable faculty, staff, and students that do read the conference and offer suggestions.
