Creating CD Case Labels

Where to find this software

In order to use these templates, you must have Adobe Illustrator 10 installed on the computer you are working on. The KeyServered version of Illustrator is installed on all public lab computers. Illustrator 10 may also be installed on student, faculty and staff computers.

Getting Started

You will download two templates in this process, one for the spine and back of the case and one for the front of the case. When applicable, please follow the instructions for your specific platform (Mac OS X or Windows XP.)

Spine Labels and Back of Case

  1. Follow the instructions for your platform to download the spine lable and back of case template: BackCover.ai.

    In OS X

  2. Double-click on the BackCover.ai file to open it. Adobe Illustrator should launch automatically.

Note: If Illustrator does not open, launch Adobe Illustrator and choose File > Open. Then browse to the BackCover.ai file on your desktop.
  3. Click on the Type tool button , in the toolbox.
  4. Using the Type tool, select “title of CD // type your text here.”
  5. Type in the title of your CD.

Note: This is the portion that will be seen on the CD spine, so it may be wise to give it a name that will allow you to identify it quickly.

  6. Repeat Steps 3-5 for the title bar of the CD.
  7. Design the large blank white space between the two dotted lines any way you would like- you can use images or text, or you can choose to leave it blank.

Note: This is the portion that will be seen on the back of the CD case.

  8. When you are finished, print the document by choosing File > Print.
  9. After you have printed out the spine and back of CD case insert, cut along the solid gray lines and then fold along the dotted line.
  10. Insert this piece of paper into the back of your CD case.

CD Insert for Front of Case

  1. Follow the instructions for your platform to download the front of case template:CDCover.ai.

    In OS X

  2. Double-click on the CDCover.ai file to open it. Adobe Illustrator should launch automatically.

Note: If Illustrator does not open, launch Adobe Illustrator and choose File > Open. Then browse to the CDCover.ai file on your desktop.
  3. Click on the Type tool button , in the toolbox.
  4. Design the front and back of the front cover however you like.

Note: The box on the right of the template is the portion you will see when you look at the front of the CD Case and the left side is the portion you will see when you open the CD Case (the back of the front cover.)

  5. When you are finished, print the document by choosing File > Print.
  6. After you have printed out the front of CD case insert, cut along the solid gray lines and then fold along the dotted line.
