Creating CD Case Labels
Where to find this software
In order to use these templates,
you must have Adobe Illustrator 10 installed on the computer you
are working on.
The
KeyServered
version
of Illustrator is installed on all public lab computers. Illustrator
10 may
also be installed on student, faculty and staff computers.
Getting Started
You will download two templates in this process, one for the spine and back
of the case and one for the front of the case. When applicable, please follow
the instructions for your specific platform (Mac OS X or Windows XP.)
Spine Labels and Back of Case
- Follow the instructions for your platform to download the spine lable and
back of case template: BackCover.ai.
In OS X
- Click on the BackCover.ai link above.
- The file will download
to your desktop automatically.
In Windows XP
- Click on the BackCover.ai link above.
- Choose to save the file to your desktop.
- Double-click on the BackCover.ai file to open it. Adobe Illustrator should
launch automatically.
Note: If Illustrator does not open, launch Adobe Illustrator and choose
File > Open. Then browse to the BackCover.ai file on your desktop.
- Click on the Type tool button
,
in the toolbox.
- Using the Type tool, select “title of CD
// type your text here.”
- Type
in the title of your CD.
Note: This is the portion that will be seen on the CD
spine, so it may be wise to give it a name that will allow you to identify
it quickly.
- Repeat Steps 3-5 for the title bar of the CD.
- Design the large blank
white space between the two dotted lines any way you would like- you can
use images or text, or you can choose to leave
it blank.
Note: This is the portion that will be seen on the back
of the CD case.
- When you are finished, print the document by choosing File > Print.
- After
you have printed out the spine and back of CD case insert, cut
along
the solid
gray
lines
and
then
fold along
the
dotted line.
- Insert this piece of paper into the back of your
CD case.
CD Insert for Front of Case
- Follow the instructions for your platform to download the front of case
template:CDCover.ai.
In OS X
- Click on the CDCover.ai link above.
- The file will download to your desktop automatically.
In Windows XP
- Click on the CDCover.ai link above.
- Choose to save the file to your desktop.
- Double-click on the CDCover.ai file to open it. Adobe
Illustrator should launch automatically.
Note: If Illustrator does not open, launch Adobe Illustrator
and choose File > Open. Then browse to the CDCover.ai file on your
desktop.
- Click on the Type tool button
,
in the toolbox.
- Design the front and back of the front cover however you like.
Note: The
box on the right
of the template is the portion you will see when you look at the front
of the CD Case and the left side is the portion you will see when you open
the CD Case (the back of the front cover.)
- When you are finished, print the document by choosing File > Print.
- After you have printed out the front of CD case insert, cut along
the solid gray lines and then fold along the dotted line.
- Insert this piece of paper into the front of your CD case.
