Before you erase the CD-RW, make a copy of any files you do not want to erase. Erasing, reformatting, or preparing a disk for burning permanently deletes all of the disk's contents.
  1. If you haven't already done so, put the CD-RW into the computer. The disc will appear on the desktop.
  2. In Finder, from the Go menu select Applications.
  3. In the Applications window, open the Utilities folder and then double-click on Disk Utility.
  4. Click on the Erase tab within the Disk Utility window. (In Panther, this may look more like a button ).

In OS X 10.2: Choose the disc you would like to erase from the list of drives on the left. The option to Erase is only available when you have clicked on a device that can be erased. You must choose the device icon (656.40 MB in the the screen shot below for OS X 10.2), and not the volume icon (Test in the screen shot below).

In OS X 10.3: Choose the disc you would like to erase from the list of drives on the left. The option to Erase is only available when you have clicked on a device that can be erased. You must choose the device icon (41.7 MB in the screen shot below), and not the volume icon (Session 1 or DiscBurnerTestCDRW in the screen shot below).

  5. Select Erase.

In OS X 10.3, you will be prompted with a warning about erasing optical media. Click Erase.
