Mozilla Firefox is a popular web browser that allows you to explore and retrieve information from web sites on the Internet (the World Wide Web). Web sites contain pages that may consist of text, images, sounds, animation, and digital video.

Installing on a Windows PC

Preparing to install

Note: During installation, your computer will need an Internet connection.

    1. If you have a older version of Firefox on your computer, we recommend that you uninstall that one before installing Firefox 2.0. To find out what version of Firefox you have on a PC, open Firefox and go to Tools > About Mozilla Firefox. On a Mac, go to File > About Mozilla Firefox. For directions on how to uninstall Firefox, see the Uninstalling Firefox section.
    2. Before installing Firefox, first print out this page by going to File > Print, then click OK.
    3. Go to the Get Firefox homepage. Click on the Download Firefox - Free button to download the Firefox installer onto your desktop.
    4. A window will appear asking, Do you want to run or save this file? Click Save.
    5. In the Save As window, select Desktop and click Save.
    6. The Firefox Setup 2.0.exe file will now download onto your computer and will appear as an icon on your desktop.
    7. If you get a message informing you that the download is complete, click Close.
    8. Close all open windows and exit all programs, including this web browser. Follow your printed copy of these instructions for the remainder of the installation.

Installing Firefox

      1. If you are using a PC computer, log into your computer. The user account you log into must have administrator privileges (Note: Most people already have administrator privileges if they can run Windows Update on their computer). For faculty and staff, log into your computer using your domain account.
      2. On your desktop, double-click on Firefox Setup 2.0.exe. If you get a Security Warning window, click Run.
      3. In the Mozilla Firefox Setup Wizard window, click Next.
      4. In the License Agreement window, select I Accept... and then click Next.
      5. In the Setup Type window, select Standard. Click Next.
      6. If you had an older version of Firefox on your computer and did not uninstall it, your old Add-ons may be incompatible with Firefox 2.0. A window will prompt you to check for updated Add-ons. If you wish to keep your Add-ons, click Check Now. Then click Install Now.
      7. In the Install Complete window, click Finish.

To configure Firefox:

NOTE: If you had a previous version of Firefox installed, all your bookmarks and homepages will automatically be imported into the new version when you install it, and you can skip this section. If this is the first time you have installed Firefox, proceed:

    1. Double-click on the Mozilla Firefox icon on your desktop to open Firefox.
    2. You may be prompted to import your bookmarks and settings from other browsers. In the Import Settings and Data window, select the browsers you wish to import bookmarks and settings from and click Next.
    3. In the next Homepage Selection window, select Import your home page from...and click Next. Firefox will import the bookmarks and settings from the other browser and then launch.
    4. You may be prompted to make Firefox your default browser. If you want Firefox to be your main browser and to automatically launch when you click on links from other programs, select Yes.

To uninstall Firefox on a Windows PC:

      1. Go to the Control Panel:
        • In Windows 98/Me/2000, click on Start > Settings > Control Panel.
        • In Windows XP, go to Start > Control Panel.
      2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs or Add or Remove Programs icon.
      3. In the Add/Remove Programs window, select Mozilla Firefox from the list and click Remove or Add/Remove.
      4. In the Uninstall Wizard, click Next.
      5. Click Uninstall.
      6. Click Finish.
      7. Restart your computer by going to Start > Shutdown and selecting Restart from the drop-down menu.
      8. Click OK to restart. If you need to log back into your computer, log in with the same user account.

Installing on Mac OS 10.2.x and later

Preparing to install

Note: During installation, your computer will need an Internet connection.

    1. If you have a older version of Firefox, we recommend that you uninstall that one before installing the newer version. To find out what version of Firefox you have, open Firefox and go to Tools > About Mozilla Firefox. For directions on how to uninstall Firefox, see the Uninstalling Firefox section.
    2. Before installing Firefox, first print out this page by going to File > Print, then click OK.
    3. Close all open applications except this browser.
    4. Go to the Get Firefox homepage. Click Other Systems and Languages. Then scroll down and click Download for English for Mac OS X.
    5. The Firefox2.0_install.dmg file will now download onto your computer and will appear as an icon on your desktop.
    6. Close this browser and follow your printed copy of these instructions for the remainder of the install.

Installing Firefox

      1. Once the Firefox installer has downloaded to your desktop, you will see a Licence Agreement window. Click Accept. If Virex begins to scan, click Stop.
      2. You will then see a Firefox window displaying the Firefox icon (orange fox with globe):

      3. Click and drag the Firefox icon into your Applications folder (in your Macintosh HD) to copy it there.
      4. Click and drag the Firefox icon onto the Dock to create an alias in your Dock.
      5. Double-click on the Firefox icon to launch Firefox.
      6. If this is the first time you've installed Firefox on your computer, the first time you launch Firefox, you will see a Import Settings and Data window. Select the browser(s) from which you want to import your settings and data (such as bookmarks, favorites, and cookies), or if you do not want to import data at this time, select don't import anything. Click Continue.
      7. In the Home Page Selection window, click Continue.
      8. Firefox will import any settings you chose and then launch. You may be asked if you want Firefox to be your default browser. Uncheck Always perform check when starting Firefox and click Yes or No.

Configuring Firefox

    1. Open Firefox and go to Firefox > Preferences.
    2. In the top pane of the Preferences window, select General.
    3. In the Location(s) field, replace the existing text with http://www.wellesley.edu. Close the Preferences window and click the Home button in the toolbar. The Wellesley College web page should appear.
    4. Exit out of Firefox, by going to Firefox > Quit Firefox.
    5. Drag the Firefox2.0_install.dmg file and the Firefox disk icon from your desktop to the Trash. Empty the Trash by going to Finder > Empty Trash.

To uninstall Firefox on a Mac:

      1. Open your Applications folder.
      2. Locate Firefox and drag it to the Trash.
      3. Empty the Trash by going to Finder > Empty Trash.
      4. If there is a shortcut to Firefox in the Dock, drag it from the Dock to delete it.
