Removing FirstClass

  1. If you have personal dictionary entries for your FirstClass spell check you can save them to be used with a new installation. The file you need to save is called USER.FCT. In FirstClass 7 and earlier this file can be found in C: > Program Files > FirstClass > Tools. In FirstClass 8 and 9 it is located in C: > My Documents > FirstClass > Tools. Drag user.fct temporarily to your Windows desktop or another location outside of the FirstClass folder. The FirstClass 9 installation instructions explain how to replace this file to use with the new version.
  2. If there is a Download folder within C: > Program Files > FirstClass it may contain copies of files that you opened as attachments to email or conference messages. If there is anything here that you need to keep, move it to another location on your computer or a removable disk so that it is no longer in the FirstClass folder.
  3. Be sure that you have fully exited from FirstClass, otherwise you will not be able to remove it properly. Look in the task bar near the time. If you see any of these icons (first class icon, first class icon, first class icon) right-click on it and choose Exit from the pop-up menu. Be sure that none of these icons is on the task bar before you proceed.
  4. Windows XP: Start >Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs.
Other Windows versions: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs.
  5. When the list of currently installed programs appears, look to see whether FirstClass Client is on the list. (If you don't see First Class Client on the list, close the windows and go to step 7.)
  6. If FirstClass is in the list of currently installed programs, click the Remove button. If/When asked if you wish to proceed, click Yes.

noteDepending on the way FirstClass was installed, this step may or may not have removed the program. Whether or not this step seems to have worked, proceed to the next step. If Change/Remove does remove the program, it will now be gone from the add/remove programs window but some old, unnecessary files will have been left behind. The following steps will remove the rest of these files.
  7. On your Windows desktop, open My Computer, then C:, then Program Files.
  8. Look for a FirstClass folder within Program Files. (In Windows 2000, you might have to click Show Files in the left side of the Program Files window to see the folders.)
  9. Drag the FirstClass folder to the Recycle Bin. If you see an error message telling you that you can not delete a file because is is being used, this means that did not exit from FirstClass before following the removal procedure. Click OK in the error message and start again.
  10. On your Windows desktop, open My Documents. Look for a folder called FirstClass and drag it to the Recycle Bin. Note that there may not be a folder with this name if you are removing a very early version of FirstClass.
  11. Close all windows so that your Windows desktop icons are visible.
  12. If there is a FirstClass shortcut on your desktop, drag it to the Recycle Bin. (Desktop shortcuts have a black arrow on the bottom left corner)
  13. Look for FirstClass in the Start menu. If you find it, right-click FirstClass and choose Delete or Remove from this list from the pop-up menu.
  14. If you have Windows 2000 or XP, there may be a shortcut to FirstClass in your helper taskbar at the bottom of the screen. If so, you should click it to select it and press the DELETE key.
  15. Right-click Recycle Bin on your Windows desktop and choose Empty Recycle Bin from the pop-up menu
