FirstClass on the Web
These instructions were written for recent
versions of Internet Explorer for Windows and Safari for
Macintosh. Web browser versions change frequently. If you
have trouble, try a different browser or a different version. |
Logging in and logging out
To log in:
- Open your Web browser and go to this address: https://firstclass.wellesley.edu
- On the introductory page click Login.
- Enter your FirstClass username and password. Click Login.
Login is case sensitive. If your username
and password are not recognized, check to be sure that you
are using the right combination of upper/lower-case letters.
If you still can't connect, your password may need to be
reset using the FirstClass client software. If you are not
able to log in using the client software, please contact
the Wellesley Computing Helpdesk at 781-283-3333 during business
hours. |
To log out:
- Click Logout at the top of the
menu on any page
- Exit from your browser and close all browser windows. From
the menu choose File > Exit on
a Windows computer. On a Macintosh choose Quit in
the Safari menu or the menu for the browser application you
are using.
Important: Although
FirstClass on the Web includes a Logout button, the degree
of security it provides depends on factors that are specific
to particular computers. The only certain way
of protecting the privacy of your account -- and the security
of the College -- is to both exit from the browser and
close all browser windows. |

Desktop and navigation tools
The FirstClass server has been upgraded to version 9. The desktop
looks different than it did in previous versions, both on the Web
and with the new client software. The first time you open
your account using either the Web version or a version of the
client since 8.3, some changes will be made to
your account. New icons will appear on your desktop and some of
the icons will have been rearranged across the top and left. These
new icons will remain part of your account even if you later log
in using an older version. Read on if you'd like to find out how
to make your desktop look similar to the way it did before the
server upgrade. More information on version 9 can be found
by clicking the Index page link at the top of this page.
Closing
and opening the navigation pane:
The navigation pane (white background), between the blue menu
and your desktop, is similar to the optional explore view from
previous versions. It is meant to give you an alternate way to
look at your messages and files and to reduce the number of windows
that are open the same time. To close the pane click
the icon circled in red at right. The icon will remain
after you close the pane so that you can click it to reopen whenever
you wish. The next time you use FirstClass it will remember whether
you left the navigation pane open or closed.
Reading pane
Just as you
use the navigation pane you can also open a reading pane to display
the content of selected messages. This allows you to skim messages
without opening them in separate windows. To open the reading
pane, you must have the navigation pane open (see above). Click
the icon on the top right of the window, circled in red at right.
This causes the window to cycle among three modes: no reading
pane, reading pane below message list, reading pane to right
of message list.
Changing icon size:
The new higher-resolution icons may not be what you want, especially
if you keep a lot of icons on your desktop. You probably see
some smaller icons mixed with the large ones. You can make all
of your icons the same size and control the size by following
the following steps. Changes you make here apply to your account
when you use the FirstClass client.
- Click Edit View on the
menu.
- In the Display format field choose Scaled
icon.
- In the Icon size field use the plus and minus signs
to set the icon size you want. Size 32 is the old icon size
and size 64 is the new large size.
- Click Save.
Moving desktop icons:
The icons that were moved to new default locations do not need
to stay there. You can drag them where you want.
Trash can:
All items you delete from your account (mailbox, desktop and
folders in those areas) will appear in your trash can. It may
take a few minutes for all of the deleted items to show up. See
the information below on deleting
and undeleting.
Other standard desktop icons:
- Mailbox: your personal mail
- System Notices: timely information about servers, mail delivery,
viruses etc.
- Official Announcements: timely information pertinent to the
entire College
- Computing Questions: useful information and a place to post
when you have questions
- Wellesley Conferences: all Wellesley conferences arranged by
categories
- Calendar
- Contacts
- Bookmarks
- Instant Messaging
Quota Indicator
The FirstClass 9 desktop has a Message Quota
indicator. This indicator keeps track of how much of your allotted
space you are using within your FirstClass account. Check this
regularly to ensure that you still have space available on the
FirstClass server.

Menu
The menu on the left is similar
to the top menu in the client version of FirstClass. The list
changes depending on what is currently open (desktop, mailbox,
message, etc.) but the menu always begins with Logout and
ends with Help.
The tools in this menu operate on whatever window is currently
open (not an item that is selected/highlighted). Click once
on menu items to use them.
Reading messages
Opening a message
Double-click a message to open it. The menu for the open message
offers several options, including Delete, Reply, Forward and
History. If the open message was sent by you, you will also
see an Unsend option on the menu.
Opening and saving attachments
If your message includes attachments, the
file names will be listed in the Attachments: section
of the message header. Click once on the file name. Some graphics
and text files will open in a browser window. For other types
of files such as Microsoft Word files, you will be asked whether
you want to save the file or open it. If you choose to save
the file, click Save and navigate to the location
on your computer or disk where you want to keep the file. If
you choose to open the file, click Open. your
computer will attempt to match the file type with a program
on your computer. You may be asked to choose a program for
the file. If you can't open the attached file at all or don't
know what program in which to open this file type, save the
file and try contacting the sender for more information.
Sorting a list
Click a column name at the top of the list. (For example,
to sort messages alphabetically by sender's name, click the
column header Name.
If you are looking at your desktop or a list of messages, the
menu will include a Create: pull-down list
from which you can choose New Message.
Enter the FirstClass name or Internet e-mail address of the
person you are sending to in the To: field, then click
the Add button next to the To: field.
If you enter a partial FirstClass name, FirstClass will present
you with a list of matching choices. In this list, click the
checkbox next to your selection(s) then click Select.
Each name you add will have a trash can icon next to it. This
does not mean that it was deleted; it is a remove button that
you can click to remove the name.
Enter any additional names in the To:, CC:,
or BCC: fields, clicking Add after
each. You can continue to add names to the header before sending
the message. To remove any name, click the delete icon next to
it.
To attach a file to the message, click Browse in the Attachments: field.
Navigate to the file that you would like to attach and click Open.
The attachment's location will appear in the Attachments:
field of the message window. Click the Attach button
to attach this file. It's name will appear in the yellow area
of the header next to Attachments:. To remove any attachment,
click its delete icon.
Complete the message by typing the subject and the message
body.
When you are ready to send your message
you can either click Send or save it in your
mailbox to send later by clicking Save.

Deleting and undeleting
Deleting
Select one or more items to be deleted, then click Delete on
the toolbar. Be sure you have selected
only the item(s) that you intend to delete.
Deleting message(s) - When you click the Delete button, the selected message(s) will immediately vanish from the screen (they are moved to the Trash Can, see below).
Deleting folder(s) - A window
will appear asking you to confirm deletion of the folder.
If you click yes, a second window will appear asking you to confirm
deletion of the contents of the folder.
Note: Hitting the delete key on the keyboard will not delete highlighted messages. To delete an item, you must click Delete from the toolbar.
Undeleting
If you delete an item and later want to retrieve it, you may
be able to do so. Deleted
items will remain in your account until the nightly system
audit process permanently purges them from the server. (The
system audit process begins at about 3:00 AM and continues
for several hours to work through each account and conference.)
If an item has not yet been purged you should be able to view
the deleted item and then undelete it. If your deleted item
does not appear in your trash can, it cannot be retrieved.
There are two methods for undeleting
Undeleting from your trash can
- Open your desktop .
- Double-click your trash can to open it. Deleted items from
your mailbox, your folders and your desktop will appear,
each with a small trash can icon next to it, indicating that
it is deleted.
- Click the trash can icon next to the items you want to
undelete. The trash can will go away.
- Undeleted items will return to the location where they
had been before deletion, but you will not find them there
until you logout and log back in to FirstClass.
Undeleting from the location of the deleted item
- If you know that the item you want to undelete was in
your mailbox or a particular folder, open that location.
- Click Show
Deleted in
the menu. Each deleted item will appear among the rest
of the items but with a will will icon next to it . (If
you don't see Show Deleted in the menu, use the navigation
pane to find your mailbox or the folder where the deleted
item had been. Then click that mailbox or folder so that
its contents are visible in the reading pane. You should
now see Show Deleted in the menu.)
- Select the item that you wish to undelete. Clicking on
the previously deleted item will automatically undelete
the item in your mailbox.
- If you would like to undelete several items at once,
use the shift key or the control key on PC's to highlight
all the items that you would like to undelete. Click Undelete
on
the toolbar.
- Click Hide Deleted on the menu to
hide all deleted items again.
- Open your mailbox.
- In the menu, from the Create: pull-down list
choose New Folder. A window will appear with a name field.
- Type a name for the folder in the Enter name: field.
- Click OK. The folder will appear in your mailbox.
- To move messages or other folders into your folder, see the
section in this document called Moving items.
This feature allows you to move one or more items to another
location. It is normally used for moving e-mail messages into
folders within your mailbox.
- Select each item you want to move. You may select several
by holding down the CTRL key while clicking.
- Click Move
on
the toolbar. A window will open with the selected item(s) on
the left and possible destinations on the right.
- Click the destination of your choice then click Move.
Mailbox Rules
Before you create a mailbox rule, be sure that you are familiar
with the issues and procedures for using rules. For more information,
see the page on Mailbox
Rules.
- Open your desktop.
- In the menu, click Preferences.
- Click the plus sign next to Messaging.
- In the Mail Rules form, click the icon next to Mailbox
Rules.
- Create a rule in the same way that you would do using the
client version of FirstClass.
- Click Save.

addresses and save these in your Contacts folder. After they
are defined, they will be visible in your FirstClass Directory
and you can address messages using these names.
Creating a new contact:
- Open your Contacts folder.
- In the menu, from the Create: pull-down
list choose New Contact. on the menu. A window will
appear with a name field.
- In the form that appears, enter a name for this contact.
- In the Work Email or Home Email field,
enter either the FirstClass name for this person or a valid
Internet address. If you enter two email addresses, messages
addressed to this contact will be sent to both.
- In the Notes section, the Quick Name field is the

Calendar
For users of the client version of the calendar:
The Web version of the FirstClass calendar feature is very
similar to that of the client version, but there are a few
key differences. Please note that any changes made in your
account for either version will appear in the other. Also note
that in the Web version you must click Save for changes to be recorded.
These instructions focus on the differences between the Web
and the client versions. You will find more complete information
about using the FirstClass calendar feature in the documentation
for the client version: FirstClass
Calendar.
Opening your Calendar:
To open your calendar, double-click the Calendar icon on your
Desktop. If the window is split, the left side is the Today
list. You can toggle between showing and hiding the today list
by clicking "Show Today List" and "Hide Today List" on the menu, respectively. Besides the Today list, the
remaining part of the calendar shows either a month, week or
day view. Click a button on the menu to change the view among
these three choices.
Depending on the current view type, you can change the visible
dates. To scroll through weeks, months or days, use the right
and left arrows next to the current dates at the top of the
page. To move quickly to specific date, use the pulldown lists
then click Go. The screenshot below shows
these controls in the Week View.

Permissions:
To set or change permissions, open your calendar then click Permissions on
the menu. (See picture below.)
To add someone to the permissions list, type their name
in the Add Permissions For field then click Go.
Remember that if you use a group name (e.g. All Users,
Student) any names that are part of that group must appear
above it on the list to retain their individual permissions.
You can control this by choosing Beginning of list or End
of list in the After field when you add
a new name.
To delete someone from the permissions list, click the
trashcan icon next to the name.
Select the access level for each person on the list from
the Access pull down list next to the name.
Click Save to record permissions changes.

In
the menu, from the Create: pull-down list
choose New Event or New Task, or, if you have a
week or month view of the calendar, click the clock icon
in the calendar on the day you want to schedule an event.
The process of creating a new event is much the same as
it is in the client version, with the following exceptions:
Instead of using an editing window with separate tabs,
the Web version includes everything in the same window.
To invite other users you must click the Participants button.
Add a participant by typing her name then clicking the Invite
User button. To delete a participant, click the
trashcan icon next to her name. After editing the Scheduling
window, click Return to Details.
To save changes, click Save. To clear
the form and begin again, click Reset.
Reading and editing events and tasks:
Click any event or
task to edit it or view more details. If you make changes
click Save.
If you edit a repeating event, instead of
a Save button you will need to choose among Save, Save
Changes to This Occurrence or Reset. These options
appear on a horizontal bar near the top of the event window.
The Save option will save your changes to this and all subsequent occurrences if this is a repeated event. Click Go after choosing.
Any event that another person invites you to
will have a red flag next to it until you have read it.
Tasks that are not completed will remain on
the Today list beginning on the start date.
To mark a task as completed (or to otherwise
change its state) open it and choose from the State pull down list. The date that you mark the task as complete will automatically be saved as the completion date.
Deleting events and tasks:
Check the box next
to the event or task you want to delete, then click Delete on
the toolbar. The deleted item(s) will not disappear until
you exit this calendar window. The next time you open it,
the item(s) will be gone.
In the Web version of the calendar, you cannot delete a single instance of a repeating event. If you
delete an event, all instances will be deleted.
Undeleting calendar events works the same
way as deleting messages. See the information above about
Undeleting.
Responding to invitations and inviting
others:
When someone schedules an event with you it will appear
with a red flag next to it in your calendar until you read
it if your calendar is set up so that people can schedule events with you. Otherwise you will receive an email notification about the event. You will see buttons at the top of the event asking
you to accept or decline. If you decline an invitation
it will remain in your calendar until you delete it.

If you invite another participant but the event creates
a conflict in that person's calendar, you will be notified
by email of the conflict. If you choose, you can then change
the date of the event in the open event window by clicking
the arrows on either side of the date or by entering a new
date from the pull down list and clicking the Go button
You can also let the calendar find an available time for
your meeting by clicking the Next Free Time button.
You can use the Instant Message feature
to have a real-time dialog among FirstClass users using
either the client version or the Web version.
To initiate an instant message session, click Instant
Message on the menu. An instant message window
will appear. On the top right is the list of Participants. Click Invite for
a list of names of those you can invite to chat with you.
Check the box next to the name of the person you want to
invite then click Invite.
On the left is the dialog. Type your input on the bottom
pane and click Send when you are finished.
The combined conversation of all participants appears on
the top pane.
If someone invites you to an instant message session you
will see a red invitation on the menu. Click the invitation
and choose to ignore, accept or decline the invitation.

If you want to leave temporarily, click Pause .
To leave permanently, click Leave.
You can change the view properties of your desktop and mailbox.
In some cases you can also change conference message lists.
These changes also affect the way FirstClass will look when
you use the client software.
Open the page for which you want to change properties
and click Edit View on the menu. If you do
not have permission to change the view properties (a conference
where you are not controller) this menu item will not appear.
The first row of the view properties screen lets
you select whether you will edit the left, right, top or bottom
pane or a column layout. You can also change the type of window
split you will see. Be sure that you select the properties of
the pane you intend to edit.
Check boxes and choose from pull-down lists for
the properties you want then click Save.
- In the desktop menu, click Preferences to access several
settings. (Ignore settings having to do with Paging, and Voice.)
- Click the plus sign next to the name of the preferences you
want to access.
- Check boxes and choose from pull-down lists for the preferences
you want.
- Click Save.
The following functions are available at the top of
the Preferences window.
- Résumé
- Change password (also on the desktop menu)
Troubleshooting Web
