Viewing Art History Images Using GraphicConverter for OS 9

Where to find this software

GraphicConverter is Mac shareware. Wellesley College has purchased a site license to install it on all public computers. GraphicConverter requires a PowerPC Mac and System 8.1 or later. If you have an OS X Macintosh, please refer to the GraphicConverter for OS X documenation.

Graphic Converter is installed on all public and classroom Macintosh computers at Wellesley. If you do not already have it installed:

    1. Click to download the Graphic Converter installer.
    2. The installer will download and unstuff. When the unstuffing has finished, you will see a gc4install folder on your desktop.
    3. Double-click on the gc4install folder to open it.
    4. Drag the GraphicConverter US folder from the gc4install folder to your Macintosh HD > Applications folder. (Note: if you are an OS 9 user, you can drag the GraphicConverter US folder to your Macintosh HD.)
    5. Drag the empty gc4install folder to the trash.

Digital images from many Art History courses are stored on a networked file server called NTM. By connecting to this file server and using GraphicConverter, you can view images, with or without comments, in a virtual slide show.

To Connect to NTM:

  1. In the Apple menu, select the Chooser.
  2. In the Chooser, click once on the AppleShare icon.
  3. Click the Server IP Address button.

  4. Where it says "Enter the Server Address", type ntm and then click Connect.

  5. The following dialog box will appear. In the "Name" box, enter your domain username and then domain password.

  6. Click Connect.
  7. In the window that appears (pictured below), double-click on Art. (Note: Do not click the small square.)
  8. 9) Close the Chooser window.

How to use GraphicConverter Software

Go to your Macintosh HD and choose GraphicConverter folder. In that folder, find the GraphicConverter icon, and double-click it to start GraphicConverter.

To choose a lecture folder
From the File menu, choose Slide Show. A dialog box will appear. To choose the lecture folder you want to view, use the drop-down menu at the upper left of the dialog box, find the Art server, and open the folder called Art History Images. (If you don't already see Art in the pull-down menu, select the Desktop and find the server in the list). Double click on the course folder name (e.g., Arth 100, Arth 223, etc.). Click once on the lecture you wish to view and then click Choose. The slide show will begin automatically.

A. To see all the slides from a lecture in order with comments:

Click on the Options button in the dialog box above and make sure that the check boxes in the dialog box you see on your screen match the settings shown in the figure below.

If a check box does not match the setting shown above, click the box to add or remove a check mark.

To make images in the slide show change when you click the mouse instead of after a delay of a specified number of seconds, choose Slide Show in the left-hand column of the Preferences window and then click on Misc. Under Change Picture, choose After mouse click. Click OK.

During a sideshow, a toolbar appears in the bottom left-hand corner that allows you to navigate through the sideshow.

You can move to the next slide in one of three ways: by clicking the mouse, pressing the spacebar, or clicking the forward button.

B. To view a slide show in random order (to test yourself):

From the File menu, Choose Slide Show. In the dialog box that appears, choose Random order in the list in the bottom right-hand corner. Select the lecture folder (as described above).

If you wish to hide the file names and comments during the slide show, click the Options... button to bring up the Slideshow General Settings Preferences and uncheck the boxes Name and Show comments.

Click Choose to start your random slide show.

Click the mouse or press the space bar to display the next random image. (If you press the arrow key on the keyboard, the order will not be random.) The random slide show will not stop once you have viewed all the files; it will continue to display the images until you stop the slide show, either by clicking the black square stop icon or by pressing the esc key on the keyboard.

C. To view only selected slides:

From the File menu, choose Open. Select an image in the dialog box, and click the Open button.

If you don't see the comments, go to the Picture menu and choose Show Comments.

You can close one image before viewing another (from the File menu, choose Close), or you can have several images open at a time. You can switch between open images by using the commands from the Windows menu.

D. To view two images side by side:

From the File menu, choose Open. A list of the images will appear. Click on one image, and click on Open. Return to the File menu to open other images.

If you don't see the comments, go to the Picture menu and choose Show Comments.

You may wish to choose Arrange Left to Right from the Windows menu.

Move between the images by clicking on their bottom right hand corners and dragging (to resize) or by clicking on the title of the image (to move the image).
