    device control box

  5. Make sure that the video is paused a few seconds before the the clip that you would like to digitize. You will be able to trim the excess off later. You should be able to see the paused movie in the movie window on your computer.

  6. When you are ready to begin recording, click the importbutton in the iMovie window on the computer, and press play on the VCR (or other player). The movie will start recording.

Capture Toggle If you do not see an Import button on your screen, make sure that the Input/Edit toggle is pushed to the left towards the camera icon.

Note: If you see a bright red light on the Sony box while the clip is being digitized, your video is copyright encoded. You will NOT be able to export your clips to VHS tape. You will be able to export them to QuickTime movies, digital video, or DVD. For more information read throught the documentation on the Exporting Movie page.

  7. To stop recording, click on the import button again. The movie clip will be named Clip 01 and placed into one of the "shelves" to the right of the recording window.

Cropping a Video Clip

  1. Drag Clip 01 to the large gray rectangular "timeline" at the bottom of the screen.

The clip should appear in the large movie window.

  2. You can play the clip by using the set of controls in the iMovie window.

  3. As the movie clip plays, you can see the playhead travel along the playbar.

The number displayed next to the playhead is the number of seconds and frames up to that point in the movie. (For example, a time of 04:11 would mean 4 seconds and 11 frames.)

Note: If you are unable to hear the audio of your captured clip, check to make sure the computer is not muted. If the computer is not muted, see the audio troubleshooting section at the bottom of this page.

  4. To crop the movie, let your mouse hover just below the play bar, and click and drag the set of white triangles below the timeline.

Drag the first triangle to the place on the timeline that you would like your movie to begin. Drag the second triangle to the place on the timeline that you would like your movie to end. The clip's timeline will be yellow between the start and stop points.

  5. When you have positioned your start and stop triangles where you want them, from the Edit menu, choose Crop. This will crop the movie clip to the portion that you selected. (The yellow portion of the timeline.)

  6. To share (export) your clips go the Sharing page. If you want to edit and export several movie clips, drag Clip 01 back to its shelf and drag another movie clip to the timeline. Follow these steps again until all of your clips are cropped and exported.

Click here for documentation on how to share (export) your movie.
