Editing Audio

 


Inserting Audio

To access Audio, click on the Media button and select Audio.

Inserting iMovie Pre-Recorded Sounds

  1. Click on the Media button and select Audio.
  2. Click on the Timeline icon to see the movie's different tracks.

  3. Select one of the Sound Effects options and then choose an individual sound.
  4. Select the movie clip in the timeline that you would like to add a sound effect to.
  5. Drag the playhead on the timeline to the frame where you would like the clip to play, and click Place at Playhead. You will see the sound clip in the movie track.

External Audio File

  1. In iMovie, go to File > Import.
  2. Browse to the audio file that you would like to insert and click Open.
  3. Select the sound clip in the Timeline and drag it to frame you want it to play at.

Inserting Audio from iTunes Music Library

  1. Click on the Media button and select Audio.
  2. Click on the Timeline icon to see the movie's different tracks.

  3. Select the iTunes Library (not seen in this image) and then choose an audio file.
  4. Select the movie clip in the timeline that you would like to add a sound effect to.
  5. Drag the playhead on the timeline to the frame where you would like the clip to play, and click Place at Playhead. You will see the sound clip in the movie track.

Inserting Audio from CD

You can also import audio from a CD without importing to iTunes first.

  1. Put your CD into the computer's CD player.
  2. In iMovie click on the Media button and select Audio.
  3. Click on the Timeline icon to see the movie's different tracks.

  4. Select your CD(not seen in this image) and then choose a track.
  5. Select the movie clip in the timeline that you would like to add a sound effect to.
  6. Drag the playhead on the timeline to the frame where you would like the clip to play, and click Place at Playhead. You will see the sound clip in the movie track.

Extracting Audio

  1. In iMovie's timeline, click on the video clip with the audio that you would like to extract.
  2. Go to the Advanced menu and choose Extract Audio.
  3. Orange pushpins will appear on the selected clip. The pushpins may appear yellow on some computers. The extracted audio clip can now be moved, deleted, or edited.

Editing Audio

Cropping

  1. Drag the ends of the tracks in the sound channels to edit the size of the audio clip.

Splitting Audio Clips

  1. In the Audio track, select the audio recording you wish to split.
  2. Drag the Playhead to desired split point.
  3. In the Edit menu, select Split Selected Audio Clip at Playhead and the audio clip will split into two individual audio segments.

Adjusting Volume

  1. Select the desired clip in the Timeline.
  2. Go to the clip volume control and click on the blue sound icon.
  3. Adjust the volume of the clip, from 0-150%.

Advanced Audio Editing

Once an audio clip is extracted, it can be edited in Amadeus II.

  1. Lauch Amadeus II.
  2. Go to File > Open...
  3. Browse to your iMovie Project folder. From your Media folder, select the audio file that you would like to edit. Audio files are labeled with "Voice".
  4. Once edited, the audio file can be reinserted into iMovie. It can also be saved as an Mp3 to be used in other applications.

Waveforms

iMovie HD has added waveforms to audio clips so you can see the peaks and valleys in the sound making it easier to line up a song or sound clip to match action in a video. Waveforms can only be viewed on audio clips, not video clips.

Note: If you want to see waveforms for audio of a video clip, you must extract the audio first.

  1. From the View menu choose Show Audio Waveforms.
