Importing Bookmarks from Netscape into Internet Explorer


If you have been collecting bookmarks using Netscape 4.7x or Netscape 7.0x and you would like to use these same bookmarks with Internet Explorer, you can easily import the bookmarks from Netscape into Internet Explorer. The import will include your own personal bookmarks plus the standard set supplied by Netscape.

These instructions explain how to import bookmarks from:

Importing Your Bookmarks from Netscape 4.7x to Internet Explorer on a Mac

    1. Click the Favorites menu, then Organize Favorites. Do not choose the options that appear when selecting Organize Favorite: New Folder, New Favorite, or New Divider.
    2. The Favorite window will open, which lists the current bookmarks and/or the defaults that you have for Internet Explorer.
    3. Click the File menu, then Import Favorite...
    4. In the Open window, if the directory is not Desktop, click on double arrows as shown below and choose Desktop.

    5. In the Open window, double-click on Macintosh HD, System Folder, Preferences, Netscape Users.
    6. Double-click on the folder with your username. If none of the folders are labeled with your username and there is only one folder, then double-click on the one folder. If there are several folders, double-click on the folder titled Wellesley Office.
    7. Click once on the file Bookmarks.html.
    8. Click Open.
    9. Now, your bookmarks for Netscape are added in Internet Explorer. The bookmarks from Netscape will be added right after your current bookmarks in a folder called Bookmarks.html. Importing Your Bookmarks from Netscape 4.7x to Internet Explorer on a Windows PC

  1. In Internet Explorer, go to Files > Import and Export...
  2. The Import/Export Wizard will open, click Next.
  3. Select Import Favorite and click Next.
  4. Make sure Import from an Application is selected.
  5. Select Netscape Navigator profile: default from the pulldown menu. The option may not be exactly the same, but it should be similar, i.e. Netscape Navigator profile: Wellesley Office. Click Next.
  6. Select the section of your Internet Explorer bookmarks that you want your Netscape bookmarks imported into, then click Next.
  7. Click Finish.
  8. Now, your Netscape bookmarks are added in Internet Explorer. The imported bookmarks will be added be in the folder you selected. You can organize your bookmarks as you normally do. For more information on organizing your bookmarks go to Organizing Your Bookmarks.

Importing Your Bookmarks from Netscape 7.0x to Internet Explorer on a Mac

    1. Go to the Start menu and select Programs > Netscape 7.0 to launch Netscape 7.0.
    2. Go to Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks.
    3. In the Bookmarks window, select Tools > Export.
    4. In the Name field, type bookmarks.html.
    5. Change the Export File location to Desktop.
    6. Click on Save.
    7. Go to the Apple menu and select Internet Explorer.
    8. In Internet Explorer, go to Favorites > Organize Favorites.
    9. Go to File > Import and Export...
    10. Navigate to the Desktop and select bookmarks.html.
    11. Click Open.
    12. Your Netscape bookmarks are now added into Internet Explorer. The imported bookmarks will appear in the Favorites menu. You can organize your bookmarks as you normally do. For more information on organizing your bookmarks go to Organizing Your Bookmarks.

Importing Your Bookmarks from Netscape 7.0x to Internet Explorer on a Windows PC

  1. Go to Start Menu > Programs > Netscape 7.0 or double click on the Netscape 7.0 icon on your desktop to launch Netscape.
  2. Go to the Bookmarks menu and select Manage Bookmarks.
  3. In the Booksmarks windows, select Tools > Export.
  4. In the File Name field, type bookmarks.html.
  5. Select Desktop for the Save in location.
  6. Click on Save.

  7. Close the Bookmarks window and quit out of Netscape.
  8. Go to the Start menu and select Programs > Internet Explorer or double click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop to open Internet Explorer.
  9. In Internet Explorer, go to Files > Import and Export...
  10. The Import/Export Wizard will open, click Next.
  11. Select Import Favorites and click Next.

  12. Select Import from a File or Address.
  13. Click on Browse and go to the Desktop. Select bookmarks.html and then click on Save.
  14. In the Import Favorites Source Dialog box, click on Next.
  15. Select a folder in Internet Explorer Favorites that you want your Netscape bookmarks imported into, then click Next.
  16. Click Finish.
  17. A dialog box saying that you have successfully imported your Favorites will appear. Click OK.

Your Netscape bookmarks are now added in Internet Explorer. The imported bookmarks will appear in the folder you selected in the Internet Explorer Favorites menu. You can organize your bookmarks as you normally do. For more information on organizing your bookmarks go to Organizing Your Bookmarks.
