Netscape is a popular web browser that allows you to explore and retrieve information from web sites on the Internet (the World Wide Web). Web sites contain pages that may consist of text, images, sounds, animation, and even digital video.

Installing on a Windows PC

System Requirements for Netscape 7.1

If your computer does not meet these system requirements, it is recommended that you use an older version of Netscape. Click here for the instructions for installing Netscape 4.7x.

Preparing to install

Note: During this install, your computer will need Internet connection.

    1. Before installing Netscape, first print out this page by clicking on the File menu and selecting Print. Click OK to print.
    2. Close all open applications except this browser.
    3. Click on the link below to download the Netscape installer onto your desktop.

      Download the Netscape 7.1 installer.

      Note: You may download this installer only if your computer is on the Wellesley network. If you are not on the campus network and wish to install the latest version of Netscape, go to the Netscape Browser Central to download and install it on your home computer.

    4. A window will appear asking, Would you like to open the file or save it to your computer? Click on Save.
    5. In the Save As window, select Desktop as the location to save in and click Save.
    6. The Netscape7_install.exe file will now download onto your computer and will appear as an icon on your desktop.
    7. If you get a message informing you that the download is complete, click Close.
    8. Close all open windows and exit all programs, including this web browser. Follow your printed copy of these instructions for the remainder of the install.

Saving Bookmarks

If there is an older version of Netscape 4.x or lower on your computer, you will need to save your bookmarks so that they can be imported into the new version of Netscape. This step is not necessary if Netscape was never installed on your computer before.

  1. Launch the older version of Netscape by double-clicking on the Netscape Communicator icon on your desktop or by going to Start > Programs > Netscape Communicator > Netscape Navigator.
  2. In Netscape Navigator, go to the Communicator menu and choose Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks.
  3. In the Bookmarks window, make sure Bookmarks for <User Name> is selected.
  4. Go to the File menu and choose Save As.
  5. In the Save bookmarks file window, navigate to the desktop and name the file as bookmark.htm. Click Save.
  6. Your bookmarks are now saved within the bookmark.htm file on your desktop. Continue following the instructions below. After Netscape 7 is installed, you will be instructed on how to restore your bookmarks in the section: To configure Netscape 7.

Uninstalling a previous version of Netscape

If there is an older version of Netscape on your computer, you will need to uninstall it before installing Netscape 7.1.

    1. Click on the Start button and then navigate to Settings > Control Panel.
    2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
    3. In the window that appears, select Netscape Communicator from the list and click Add/Remove... (in Windows 2000 and higher, this button will say Change/Remove.)
    4. When you are asked if you are sure you want to uninstall Netscape Communicator, choose Yes.
    5. Close the Add/Remove Programs window by clicking OK or by clicking on the X button on the top right corner of the window.

Installing Netscape

      1. Close all open applications.
      2. If you are using Windows 2000 and are not logged into your computer using an Administrator account, go to Start > Log off and click OK. On faculty and staff computers, the owner of the computer should log back in using his or her domain account username and password.
      3. On your desktop, double-click on Netscape7_install.exe.
      4. In the Welcome to Netscape 7.1 Setup window, click Next.
      5. In the Software License Agreement window, click Accept.
      6. In the Setup Type window, select Custom. Click Next.
      7. If you get a message saying that The following directory does not exist: Would you like to create it? Click Yes.
      8. In the Select Typical Components window, click Next.
      9. In the Select Additional Components window, UNCHECK all the options except Sun Java 2 and Macromedia Flash Player. Click Next.
      10. In the Select Program Folder window, click Next.
      11. In the Quick Launch window, uncheck Use Quick Launch for faster startup times when possible. Click Next.
      12. In the Additional Options window, uncheck Make Netscape.com my home page and Save installer files locally. Click Next.
      13. In the Start Install window, click Install. The installation may take several minutes.
      14. After installation is complete, if you are asked to Register or to sign-in with a screen name and password, you may sign-in using your AOL, AIM, or Netscape account. If you do not have an account, click Cancel and if you are asked, Are you sure you want to exit registration?, click Yes.
      15. When asked Would you like to make it your default browser? Click No. Note: Internet Explorer is currently supported as Wellesley's primary internet browser.
      16. Close the Netscape 7.1 window that opens automatically.
      17. If the following icons appear on your Windows desktop or the QuickLaunch section of the toolbar at the bottom-left section of the screen, delete them by dragging the icons and dropping them into the Recycle Bin:
        • Netscape7_install.exe
        • Netscape Mail and Newsgroups
        • Instant Messenger
        • Free AOL and Unlimited Internet
        • RealOne Player
        • RealPlayer Basic
        • Free Offers from Real.com.

      18. If you had saved your bookmarks from an older version of Netscape, remember to move the bookmark.htm file from the desktop to your Netscape folder. Double-click on My Computer > C: > Program Files > Netscape > Users > Default. From the desktop, drag the bookmark.htm file from the desktop into the Default folder.
      19. To launch Netscape Communicator 7.1, double-click the Netscape 7.1 icon on your Windows desktop or click Start > Programs > Netscape Communicator > Navigator.

To configure Netscape:

    1. Double-click on the Netscape 7.1 icon on your desktop to open Communicator.
    2. If you receive are asked to make Netscape your default browser, click No. Note: Internet Explorer is currently supported as Wellesley's primary internet browser.
    3. Netscape Communicator will launch.
    4. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
    5. In the left pane of the Preferences window, select Navigator.
    6. In the Location field, replace the existing text with http://www.wellesley.edu. Click OK. Click the Home button in the toolbar. The Wellesley College web page should appear.
    7. If you had saved your bookmarks from an older version of Netscape on your computer according to the Saving Bookmarks section above, then you may import your old bookmarks to Netscape by following the steps below:
        • In Navigator, go to the Bookmarks menu and choose Manage Bookmarks.
        • In the Bookmarks window, go to Tools > Import.
        • In the Import bookmark window, navigate to your Desktop.
        • Click once to select the bookmark.htm file and then click on Open.
        • Your old bookmarks will be imported into a bookmarks folder called Bookmarks for <user name> (this user name is the name of the user profile in the older version of Netscape).     8. To exit out of Netscape, go to File > Exit.

Installing on Mac OS 9

System Requirements for Netscape 7.01

Note: Installing Netscape 7.01 requires version 5.6 of Stuffit Expander or higher. If you have a beige G3 or older, or have an older OS, it is not recommended that you upgrade to Netscape 7 because it is a resource-intensive program. If you have an older version of Stuffit Expander but meet the system requirements, faculty/staff should call the Helpdesk for assistance, students should install a more recent version of Stuffit Expander using the Stuffit installation instructions. Preparing to install

    3. Click on the link below to download the Netscape installer onto your desktop.

      Download the Netscape 7.01 installer.

    4. The Netscape7_install.bin file will now download onto your computer and will appear as an icon on your desktop.
    5. Close all open windows and exit all programs, including this web browser. Follow your printed copy of these instructions for the remainder of the install.

Saving Bookmarks

If you have an older version of Netscape on your computer, you will need to save your bookmarks so that they can be imported into the new version of Netscape. This step is not necessary if you have not had Netscape on your computer before.

1. Double-click on the Macintosh HD > System Folder > Preferences > Netscape Users.
2. Inside the Netscape Users folder, you will see either a Wellesley Office folder, Default folder, or a folder with your name on it. Double-click on that folder.
3. Drag the Bookmarks.html or bookmark.htm file to the desktop.

Uninstalling a previous version of Netscape

    1. Remember to save your bookmarks using the above directions.
    2. Click on your Macintosh HD > Systems > Preferences.
    3. Drag the Mozilla Registry and Mozilla versions files to the Trash.
    4. In the Macintosh HD window, drag the Netscape folder to the trash.
    5. Empty the trash by going to the Special menu and selecting Empty Trash.

Installing Netscape

      1. Close all open applications.
      2. Double-click on the Netscape7_install.bin file on the desktop.
      3. If a window opens that says What should Netscape do with this file?, choose Open using Stuffit Expander. Click OK.
      4. On your Macintosh desktop, double-click the Netscape Full Installer folder.
      5. Double-click on Netscape 7.01 Installer.
      6. In the Welcome window, click Continue.
      7. In the Software License Agreement window, click Accept.
      8. In the next window, select Custom Install from the drop down menu. Make sure that the Installation Location is set to on disk: Macintosh HD. Click Continue.
      9. In the next window, click Continue.
      10. In this window, make sure that only the checkboxes for AOL ART Image Support, and Macromedia Flash Player are checked. Click Continue.
      11. In the next window, verify that Save installer modules upon download is unchecked. Click Install.
      12. Then make sure that Save installer files locally is Not checked. Click Next.
      13. In the next window, click Install. The installation may take several minutes.
      14. If you are asked to Register or to sign-in with a screen name and password, you may sign-in using your AOL, AIM, or Netscape account. If you do not have an account, click Cancel and if you are asked, Are you sure you want to exit registration?, click Yes.
      15. Close the Netscape 7.0 window that opens automatically.
      16. Close any remaining open windows.
      17. Drag the Netscape Installer folder and the Netscape7_install.bin file from your desktop to the Trash. Empty the Trash by choosing Special > Empty Trash.

To configure Netscape:

    1. Double-click on the Netscape 7.0 icon on your desktop to open Communicator.
    2. If you receive are asked to make Netscape your default browser, click No. Note: Internet Explorer is currently supported as Wellesley's primary internet browser.
    3. Netscape Communicator will launch.
    4. From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
    5. In the left pane of the Preferences window, select Navigator.

To uninstall Netscape on a Windows PC:

  1. Go to the Control Panel:
  2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs or Add or Remove Programs icon.
  3. In the "Add/Remove Programs" window, select Netscape 7.1 from the list and click Remove or Add/Remove.
  4. When you are asked if you are sure you want to uninstall Netscape, choose Yes.
  5. Close all open windows.
  6. Restart your computer by going to Start > Shutdown and selecting Restart from the drop-down menu.
  7. Click OK to restart. If you need to log back into your computer, log in with the same user account.

To uninstall Netscape on a Mac:

  1. Double-click on Macintosh HD.
  2. Locate the Netscape 7 folder
  3. Drag the Netscape folder into the Trash.
  4. Empty Trash.
  5. Delete any alias in the Apple menu.
