Determining the Queue Name of a Printer

In order to set up a printer in NIPrint on a PC or via LPR on a Mac, you must have the queue name of the printer. In times past, we could quickly get printer queue names using commands in Sallie; now that Sallie is gone, however, finding queue names can be tricky. If the printer does not have this queue name displayed somewhere on it, the next best way to get this information is to print out a test or configuration page from the printer. Printing a configuration page is also a good way to test whether the printer itself is working when troubleshooting printer problems.

To print test pages for the HP and Epson Printers on campus, do the following:

HP Laserjet printers: the configuration page that is printed will contain information on the printer, including its queue name (usually on the second page. If you are not able to locate the queue name then refer to the instructions at the bottom of this page.)

HP Laserjet 4, 4M, or 4M Plus:

1. Press On Line to take the printer OFF LINE.
2. Press Menu until TEST MENU appears on the printer panel.
3. Press Item until SELF TEST appears on the panel.
4. Press Enter to print a self test page.
5. Press On Line to return the printer ON LINE.

HP Laserjet 5 or 5M:

1. Press Menu until TEST MENU appears on the printer display.
2. Press Item until PRINT SELF TEST appears on the panel.
3. Press Select, and the panel will read PRINTING CONFIGURATION PAGE.

HP Laserjet 4000 series, (includes 4050 and 4100 models):

1. Press Menu until INFORMATION MENU appears on the printer display.
2. Press Item until PRINT CONFIGURATION appears on the panel.
3. Press Select to print out a configuration page.

HP Laserjet 4500 and 4550 series:

1. Press Menu until INFORMATION MENU appears on the printer display.
2. Press Item until PRINT CONFIGURATION appears on the panel.
3. Press Select to print out a configuration page.

HP Laserjet 8100 and 8150 series:

1. Press Menu until INFORMATION MENU appears on the printer display.
2. Press Item until PRINT CONFIGURATION appears on the panel.
3. Press Select to print out a configuration page.

For Epson printers: if the configuration page prints correctly, then the problem lies with the computer's configuration or program settings. If the configuration page doesn't print, then there is a problem with the printer itself.

Epson Stylus Color 740 and 740i:

1. Turn the printer off.
2. Hold down the load/eject button while pressing the power button until the power light starts to flash, then release both buttons.
3. The printer will print a check page.
4. Restart the printer.

If the above instructions do not work:

1. The page will show the printer's IP address.
2. Take the IP address to a PC and go to Start > Programs > MS-DOS Prompt.
3. Type: ping -a 149.130.x.x substituting the printer IP address for the x's.
