Windows XP Cannot Connect to On-Campus Servers

Symptoms:

Windows XP: The computer can connect to off-campus servers, including web servers, but cannot connect to on-campus servers such as FirstClass and www.wellesley.edu.

Cause:

The Windows Networking Services are interfering with connections to servers on the campus network.

Solution:

Disable the Windows Networking Services:

  1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the left pane of the Add or Remove Programs window, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  4. Uncheck Networking Services.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Finish.
  7. Close the Add or Remove Programs window and the Control Panel window.
  8. Restart the computer.
