Residential Gateway Device / 1394 Connection
Symptoms:
Windows Millennium Edition: The computer detects a Residential Gateway Device.
Windows XP: A "1394" connection appears in the Network Connections window.
Cause:
Universal Plug and Play is detecting another computer on the network with Internet Connection Sharing enabled. The Universal Plug and Play feature allows Windows to automatically detect certain types of devices across the network. If a student's computer is mistakenly configured to use Internet Connection Sharing, other computers on the network may detect t as a Residential Gateway Device or a 1394 connection through Universal Plug and Play.
Solution:
To stop your computer from detecting 1394 connections or Residential Gateway Devices, you can disable Universal Plug and Play.
To disable Universal Plug and Play in Windows XP:
- From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
- Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
- In the left pane of the Add or Remove Programs window, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
- Highlight Networking Services (do not click in the checkbox next to Networking Services), then click Details.
- Uncheck Universal Plug and Play. Click OK.
- NOTE: In Windows XP Service Pack 2, you need to make sure both Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client as well as UPnP User Interface are unchecked.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- Close the Add or Remove Programs window and the Control Panel window.
To disable Universal Plug and Play in Windows Millennium Edition:
- From the Start menu, choose Settings, then Control Panel.
- Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
- Click the Windows Setup tab.
- Highlight Communications (do not click in the checkbox next to Communications), then click Details.
- In the Components list, uncheck Universal Plug and Play. Click OK.
- In the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, click OK.
- Click Yes to restart your computer.
