Installing Windows XP Service Pack 2

NOTES: These instructions are for installing Windows XP Service Pack via the CD provided to you by your FYM, RA or RD. Please do not follow these instructions if you have downloded Service Pack 2 directly from Microsoft.

This patch should ONLY be applied to computers running a previous version of Windows XP. If you are not sure which version of Windows you are running, click here.

As with any major Service Pack or Operating System upgrade, you should back up any important data and contact your computer's manufacturuer to ensure that your computer can support this new version of Windows. In particular, students with Dell computers should contact Dell regarding Service Pack 2.

Please disable any Anti-Virus software that you are running. To disable McAfee VirusScan's On-Demand Scan, Right-Click on the McAfee Shield icon, and click on Disable On-Access Scan.

To install Service Pack 2:
  1. Turn your computer on, login to an account with Administrative rights and close all open applications.
  2. Back-Up and vital documents and settings from your computer. You should maintain regular backups of your files.
  3. Insert the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD.
  4. The CD should automatically launch the Installer. If the installer doesn't launch automatically go to My Computer > CD Rom drive, and double-click on the autorun.exe file.
  5. In the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 window, click Continue.
  6. In the Service Pack 2 introduces enhanced security features window, click Install Now.
  7. An Extracting Files window will appear and copy files to the harddrive. This may take from 3 to 10 minutes to complete.
  8. When the files have been copied, the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard window will appear. Click Next.
  9. In the License Agreement window, please read the license agreement and if you agree to the terms, click the circle next to I Agree, then click Next.
  10. In the Select Options window, click Next.
  11. When you see the Updating Your System window, Service Pack 2 is now being installed on your computer. This may take between 30minutes and 2 hours depending on the speed of your computer.
  12. When Service Pack 2 has been installed, in the Completing the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard window, click Finish to restart your computer.
  13. When your computer restarts, you will be asked about Windows Updates. Click on the circle next to the green shield with the check mark in it to enable Automatic Updates, then click the green arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  14. Login to the computer with an account that has Administrative rights.
  15. A Security Center window should appear. If it doesn't automatically appear, go to Start > Control Panel and double-click on Security Center.
  16. Click on Windows Firewall near the bottom of the window.
  17. Click on the Advanced tab. In the ICMP section, click Settings.
  18. Check the box for Allow incoming echo requests and click OK.
  19. Click OK again, then close the Security Center window.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is now installed on your computer. Please return the CD to your RA, RD, or FYM so that other students can upgrade their computers.
