8. VirusScan
VirusScan 7 is the standard virus protection software at Wellesley College for PCs . Viruses are small computer programs that alter your hard drive or floppy disks in various ways. Some can cause extensive damage while others are mere nuisances. Like biological viruses they are difficult to detect and may be transmitted to other computers or disks. For instance, if you insert a floppy disk which contains an infected file into your computer, your computer may also become infected and you may lose valuable information. Protection from computer viruses, therefore, is very important.
Viruses are transmitted through infected floppy disks, infected files downloaded from the Internet, and infected documents attached to E-mail messages. (Note that you cannot get a virus simply by reading a text-only E-mail message.)
The College has a site license for so that all staff and students can install VirusScan on their office and home computers to guard against viruses.
