Adding a new network printer

Setting up to print on both sides of a page (for duplex printers only)

Before adding a new networked printer, find out the queue name, manufacturer and model number of your printer. (The queue name will be a set of six numbers and letters, usually starting with the letter P and containing the first three letters of your building name.)

Adding a new network printer

  1. From the Start menu, select Printers and Faxes.
  2. On the left side of the window, in the Printer Tasks section, click on the link for Add a Printer.

  3. In the Add Printer Wizard window, click Next.
  4. In the Local or Network Printer window, select Local Printer. Uncheck Automatically detect and install my plug-and-play printer. Click Next.
  5. In the Select a Printer Port window, choose Create a new port. From the Type of port list, select Standard TCP/IP Port. Click Next.

  6. In the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard window, click Next.
  7. In the Printer Name or IP Address field, type the queue name of your printer (e.g., psci7a) followed by .wellesley.edu. The Port Name field will be automatically filled in.

  8. Click Next.
  9. Click Finish. It may take a few moments before the next window appears.
  10. From the Manufacturers list, select HP. From the Printers list, select the model number of your printer, followed by the designation "PS" or "PostScript" (e.g., HP LaserJet 5/5M PostScript, HP LaserJet 4000 Series PS, or HP LaserJet 4050 Series PS).
    1. If the correct model number is not listed:

  11. Click Next.
  12. If you are asked whether you want to keep an existing driver, select Keep existing driver, then click Next.
  13. In the Printer name field, type the printer's queue name, model name, and location (e.g., PSCI7A HP4300 in Wendy's Office). If this is the printer you will be using most often, select Yes to use this printer as your default printer; otherwise, select No. Click Next.

  14. If you are asked whether you wish to share the printer, select Do not share this printer. Click Next.
  15. When you are asked whether to print a test page, select No.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Click Finish.
  18. If you receive a message that a Microsoft digital signature was not found, click Yes to continue the installation.
  19. The printer setup is now complete. To check if the printer is working correctly, go to Start > Printers and Faxes. Right-click on the newly created printer Printer icon, select Properties and then click on the button for Print Test Page.

Setting up to print on both sides of a page

These instructions only apply to duplex printers which can print on both sides of a page.

  1. Go to Start and choose Printers and Faxes.
  2. In the Printers and Faxes window, right-click on the duplex printer and select Properties.
  3. In the windows that appears, click on the Device Settings tab.
  4. Scroll down to the Installable Options section and see if the Duplex option says Installed. If it does not, select that option. Note: if it does not have Duplex: Installed as an option, you may be using the wrong printer driver for this printer. Please post to Computing Questions or use your regular computer assistance (Help Desk x3333 for faculty and staff; students ask a cluster consultant on duty, or get help from your RCC http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/ResNet/ at Computing First Aid or by submitting a Student Computing Help form).

  5. If you needed to change it from Not Installed to Installed, click Apply and then click OK.
  6. By default, printing to the printer will still print on one side of the page.

To set your duplex printer to print on both sides of a page by default:

  1. If the Printer and Faxes window is not open, go to Start > Printer and Faxes.
  2. Select your duplex printer.
  3. From the File menu, select Printing Preferences.
  4. For some computers, in the Layout tab, under the Print on Both Sides section, select Flip on Long Edge.

  5. For other printers, go to the Finishing tab and in the Document Options section, check the checkbox next to Print on Both Sides.
  6. Click Apply and then click OK.
  7. Close any open windows.
