Adding a new network printer
Setting up to print on both sides of a page (for duplex
printers only) |
Before adding a new networked printer,
find out the queue name, manufacturer and model number of your printer.
(The queue name will be a set of six numbers and letters, usually starting
with the letter P and containing the first three letters of your building
name.) |
Adding a new network printer
-
From the Start menu, select Printers and Faxes.
-
On the left side of the window, in the Printer Tasks
section, click on the link for Add a Printer.

-
In the Add Printer Wizard window, click Next.
-
In the Local or Network Printer window, select Local
Printer. Uncheck Automatically detect and install my
plug-and-play printer. Click Next.
-
In the Select a Printer Port window, click on the drop down menu next to Use the following port. If your printer queue is listed, select it and click Next. If it is not listed in the menu, choose Create a new
port. From the Type of port list, select Standard TCP/IP
Port. Click Next.
-
In the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard window, click
Next.
- In the Printer Name or IP Address field, type the queue
name of your printer (e.g., psci7a) followed by
.wellesley.edu. The Port Name field will be automatically
filled in.

- Click Next.
- Click Finish. It may take a few moments before the next window
appears.
- From the Manufacturers list, select HP. From the
Printers list, select the model number of your printer, followed by the
designation "PS" or "PostScript" (e.g., HP LaserJet 5/5M PostScript, HP
LaserJet 4000 Series PS, or HP LaserJet 4050 Series PS).
NOTE: For HP LaserJet 4014 printers, select HP Universal Printing Driver instead of a specific printer model. It should be listed as the first printer model in the list of HP printers. Continue to step 11.
If your printer model is not listed, follow the directions below to add it.
- Download the installer for your printer:
- Double-click on the installer and click Yes to extract the files to your computer.
- In the Add Printer Wizard window, click the Have Disk button below the Printers field.
- Click Browse.
- Click on My Computer in the left pane, then double-click on the C drive, then the Printers folder, then the folder whose name corresponds to the model number of the printer you will be using (i.e. HP 4200 PS). For HP 4014 printers, select HP Universal Printer Driver instead of a specific model number.
- In the Install From Disk window, click OK.
- Select the model number of the printer you will be using again and click Next.
- Click Next.
- If you are asked whether you want to keep an existing driver, select
Replace existing driver, then click Next.
- In the Printer name field, type the printer's queue name, model name, location (e.g.,
PSCI7A HP4300 in Wendy's Office), and double-sided or single-sided. If this is the printer you will be using most often, select
Yes to use this printer as your default printer; otherwise, select
No. Click Next.

- If you are asked whether you wish to share the printer, select
Do not share this printer. Click Next.
- When you are asked whether to print a test page, select No.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- If you receive a message that a Microsoft digital signature was not found,
click Yes to continue the installation.
- To check if the printer is working
correctly, go to Start > Printers and Faxes. Right-click on
the newly created printer, select Properties
and then click on the button for Print Test Page.

Setting up the duplex option for a printer:
- Go to Start > Printers and Faxes.
- In the Printers and Faxes window, right-click on the desired printer and click Properties.

Printing a double-sided document one time:
- Open the program.
- Click on File > Print.
- Click on the Preferences button.
- In the Layout tab, under the Print on Both Sides section, select Flip on Long Edge to print duplex.
Setting duplex printing as a default:
- Go to Start > Printers and Faxes.
- In the Printers and Faxes window, right-click on the desired printer and select Printing Preferences.
- In the Layout tab under the Print on Both Sides section, select Flip on Long Edge. Click Apply and then click OK.
To print single-sided again, go to File > Print and click the Properties button. In the Layout tab under the Print on Both Sides section, select None. Click OK. Note that if you want to print duplex from the same application immediately after printing single-sided, you will either need to change None back to Flip on Long Edge, or you will need to close the application and open it again so the printing default can be restored to duplex.
