The Counseling Service is the clinical wing of the Stone Center, providing confidential individual and group counseling and a variety of outreach programs to Wellesley College, from small group discussions and workshops to major campus-wide events.

At the Counseling Service, ongoing attention is paid to multicultural awareness and training by a staff that is diverse in ethnic origin and sexual orientation.

A primary commitment of the Counseling Service is the promotion of psychological growth. We approach this from a belief that one's development is influenced by personal history and the larger social environment. Thus, we pay attention to the individual needs of students in the context of their functioning at Wellesley College. We also focus, from a community perspective, on the needs of the College at large in order to foster a collaborative relationship with all segments of this institution. This collaboration is geared toward fostering a social and academic milieu that is enriching and holding for student life.

The college years, in particular, are a time of growth and change. As new developmental steps are taken, they are often accompanied by both challenges and dilemmas. Some of these result in excitement and greater self-awareness, while others are accompanied by self-doubts, anxieties, fears, and depression. For these concerns, as well as for more serious crises, it is often helpful to gain the perspective of a professional, caring person.

We believe that the capacity to explore personal concerns or feelings, whether they be large or small, is a sign of strength. Any concern of a student is regarded as important and is treated with strict confidentiality. The Counseling Service is designed to help clarify the nature of concerns and to explore more effective ways of handling them, both now and in the future.
