How do we see the places we visit, and what images do we
desire to take home with us? About Away featured
photographs from the Davis Museum's permanent collection that
concern the observations and motives of women when they travel
away from home to make pictures. These travelers report, savor,
or question the social and natural landscape they encounter,
whether close at hand or far away. This installation was organized
in conjunction with a seminar offered by Professor Marilyn
Sides on literary travel writing. About Away included
work by Marion Post Wolcott, Helen Levitt, Virginia Beahan
and Laura McPhee, Lois Conner, Mary Peck, Susan Meiselas,
Flor Garduno, and Barbara Bosworth, among others.
