John Frederick Peto, Still Life with Pipe and Book

This painting by John Frederick Peto provides a point of entry into 19th-century American still life painting. Books, one of Peto's most frequently represented objects, tend to be well used, as in appreciated, and apparently they were in his own household. They act as stand-ins for human knowledge and culture, literature and art, and the durability of the same.

On view in the American Art installation.
