STEPS
FOR DEPARTMENTAL CURRICULUM
FILE PREPARATION FOR 2008-2009 |
|
These directions are for all
departments to follow when preparing the curriculum for next year's catalog.
If you use these directions the file you produce can be read and edited
by a PC with Word 97 for Windows.
You will receive your department's
2007-08 curriculum file and summary spreadsheet via
FirstClass. Please download this file to your desktop and
create a folder called Curriculum, and put the file into it. This
folder
should be placed insider you Documents folder on your Mac or PC. Keep
all of your work related to the Curriculum in this folder. Please
return
your new file via FirstClass mail attachment to jlewis. Put the department
name in the subject line of your email. Please update this subject
line with all subsequent curriculum-related emails, e.g.
anth changes.
Mac
- Open MS Word.
- Under the FILE menu choose OPEN,
click DESKTOP button, double click on the Curriculum folder or click
OPEN button. Double click on the file deptyear.doc or click
OPEN button.
- Create a new file that you will edit.
Under the file menu choose SAVE AS, and name it dept2008.doc
e.g: eng2008.doc, chem2008.doc, etc., the letters and numbers before
the .doc extension should have no more than 10 letters and numbers
with no spaces. The .doc extension is necessary for a PC version of
Word to read the file for future editing. Save file type as Word
document. Place your Curriculum folder in your Documents folder.
Storing it on your Desktop risks losing the work should you have a
major crash.
- Please be sure to make a backup of
your file before you send a copy to Jennifer Lewis should you need
to send her another copy at a later date. For help in backing up go

Troubleshooting Tips:
Note: Most computers on campus at
this time have Word 98 for Mac or Word 97 for PC as their lowest versions.
All of the highter versions of Word on both platforms are backward compatible.
1. (Mac) If you receive an
error message "Word cannot create or save this file," the computer may
have problems that need diagnosing. If you have checked everything else
and are having other problems with your computer, i.e. freezing, having
to force quit often, call the Help Desk x3333 and request assistance.
2. Be sure to name your file a letter
and number combination with a .doc extension that does not
exceed 10 characters.
3. The file must be saved as a Word
document.
4. (Mac) You are unable
to read the original file given to you:
a) If you have
Word 5.1a or you are using Word 5.1a or 6.0 and need
to read Word 97 (PC)or Word 98 (Mac)go to:
Chooser/appleshare/science center/NTM/log on as a
guest/community/Mac/Software Extras/: Word 97-98
Converter and read directions to install on your
computer.
5. (PC) You are unable
to read the original file given to you:
a) If you are
using Word 6.0 or Word for Windows 95 V. 7.0 go to
Network Neighborhood/NTM/Community/Windows 95/Software
Extras/Word 97 Converters and read directions to
install on your computer.
6. The documentation on
the CWIS detailing how to read information from various
versions of Word is located at: http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/ Word/Conversion/conversionToc.html
