Africana Studies

The Africana Studies Department at Wellesley College invites applications for a tenure-track position in religion with interests in media and society studies and within the context of Africa and the African Diaspora. The position is open as to rank, starting in September 2008.

We are seeking candidates who are committed to excellence in teaching and research. Candidates should have an active, theoretically-based research agenda, a strong publication record, and a record of superior performance in undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will teach at both the introductory and advanced levels. Our teaching load is 2 courses per semester. American Studies

The American Studies Program at Wellesley College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor effective July 2008. We seek outstanding candidates with interdisciplinary training and a strong theoretical foundation who can help lead American Studies at Wellesley in exciting new directions. Particular field of study and area of specialization are open. Ph.D. in American Studies or a related interdisciplinary field must be in hand at time of appointment. Evidence of successful teaching and potential for significant scholarly publication is essential.

Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor position beginning Fall 2008. Founded in 1875, Wellesley College has been a leader in liberal arts and the education of women for more than 125 years. The College's 500-acre campus near Boston is home to 2,300 undergraduate students. The teaching load (four courses per year) is comparable to many universities, and faculty are expected to maintain an active research program. We especially encourage applications from candidates who have received a broad training in anthropology, including it's major sub-fields. We seek applicants who are interested in working in a cooperative and collaborative teaching environment and who are strongly committed to liberal arts education and excellence in scholarship. This position requires a Ph.D. in Anthropology along with teaching experience and a publication record.

Art (Studio Art)

The Wellesley College Art Department seeks an entry level, assistant professor, full-time, tenure-track, articulate, dynamic artist with expertise in painting, drawing and 2-D foundations. She/he should possess an MFA or equivalent terminal degree and have evidence of a promising strong career underway. Teaching load consists of four courses per year, including Basic 2-D design (emphasizing the fundamentals of composition applicable across all fields) and Drawing I, plus intermediate and upper level courses in painting, drawing and special topics such as Color and/or Painting Techniques.

Our undergraduate curriculum supports majors in Studio Art, Art History, Media Arts, and Architecture, and addresses the arts requirement for all majors in the College. The opportunity exists to develop new courses and to revise those existing within the curriculum.

The successful candidate will demonstrate clear aptitude for teaching two-dimensional design, painting and drawing as well as an ability to engage studio investigation within the broader aims of a liberal arts education. Strong exhibition record is desired as well as evidence of strong teaching capability. In addition to ongoing professional development and college wide service, responsibilities include assisting with the oversight and development of studio facilities. Collaboration with the Davis Museum and Cultural Center is encouraged, as is interface with nearby programs at MIT, Olin College of Engineering and Brandeis University.

Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences at Wellesley College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin August 2008. We are seeking a broadly-trained biologist who is strongly committed to excellence in both teaching and research in a liberal arts college environment. The position is open to any field of biology, however, we are interested in candidates in developmental biology, endocrinology or behavior. The successful candidate will teach courses at all levels of the curriculum and develop an active research program that involves undergraduates.

Classical Studies (two openings)

Assistant Professor Classical Studies (Culture)

The department of Classical Studies at Wellesley College announces a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Material Culture to begin September 2008.

We invite applications from field archaeologists, marine or land based, doing innovative, theoretically-informed and interdisciplinary work in the material culture of Greco-Roman antiquity. We prefer someone who has connections with an on-going archeological project who could involve Wellesley students in that project. We need someone who is able and willing to teach language courses on a regular basis as part of his/her teaching load in the department. We welcome applicants whose work focuses on maritime trade or marine archeology. The teaching load is two courses per term, salary and benefits are highly competitive, and a faculty member is eligible for a full year's research leave after reappointment before the tenure review. Completion of Ph.D. By Oct. 1, 2008 is strongly preferred.

Computer Science (two openings)

Wellesley College is delighted to announce two faculty openings for the next academic year, 2008-09. The first is for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Computer Science; the second is for a two-year Hess Fellowship, generously funded by the Norma Wilentz Hess Faculty and Program Fund in Computer Science.

We are seeking outstanding teachers and scholars for both positions. The tenure-track position has a teaching load of two courses per semester, with the possibility for a one-year pre-tenure early leave to help the candidate extend and promote their research in preparation for tenure. Wellesley provides startup research funds, ample opportunities for internal research funding and strong support for external funding.

The Norma Wilentz Hess Fellowship is funded at the Visiting Assistant Professor level. This fellowship will help Wellesley maintain a flexible Computer Science curriculum that explores interdisciplinary learning and new directions of special promise. With a teaching load of one course per semester, the Hess Fellow will have ample opportunity for innovative course development and collaborative teaching and research projects with Wellesley faculty and students. The fellowship also includes support for travel, research, equipment, conference attendance, and other academic activities.

The Computer Science Department offers both a major and a minor in computer science and supports interdisciplinary programs in media arts and sciences, cognitive science, and neuroscience. Cross-registration programs with MIT, Olin College of Engineering, Brandeis, and Babson proximity to other Boston-area universities and industries dramatically increase the curricular and research resources available to Wellesley's faculty, staff, and students.

Applicants should have a Ph. D. (or be close to completion) in Computer Science or a related discipline. Strong candidates in any area of specialty will be considered, but we especially encourage applicants in computer systems, computer security, architecture, software engineering, and artificial intelligence, as well as interdisciplinary fields such as human/computer interaction, bioinformatics, educational computing, and ethical, social, and legal aspects of computing.

East Asian Languages & Literature

Wellesley College invites applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty position in Traditional Chinese Literature, beginning July 1, 2008. A sub-field in poetry is desirable. Responsibilities include teaching advanced Chinese (including classical Chinese), depending on the need of the department, and at least one literature/culture course each semester, for a total of four courses per year.

For entry-level applicants, PhD in hand or very near completion; ongoing scholarship in a relevant field; native or near-native fluency in Chinese and English; and a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates are all required. For applicants beyond the entry level, teaching experience and a level of scholarship commensurate with rank is expected.

The Wellesley College English Department, in connection with the Newhouse Humanities Center, invites applications for the position of Newhouse Professor/Writer-in-Residence, a non-renewable position in creative writing extending from one to three years depending on the interest and availability of the candidate. Normal teaching program is two courses per semester, plus direction of student independent work. Candidates may work primarily in fiction, creative non-fiction, screenwriting, or playwriting.

Rank open, competitive salary based on experience and distinction of publication record. Must have at least one published book or equivalent credits. Previous experience teaching creative writing strongly preferred.

Geosciences

The Department of Geosciences at Wellesley College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor beginning September 2008. We seek an exceptional scientist who can integrate classroom, field and laboratory approaches to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts environment. This individual will be expected to develop courses at all levels of our curriculum, with emphasis in structural geology. There will be an expectation to develop courses complementary to existing offerings. The ideal candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program that would provide significant research opportunities for undergraduates. Wellesley College seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track, first-level assistant professorship in modern European history (nineteenth and twentieth centuries). National specialization is open but must be continental, excluding Russia. Research and teaching interests in European international, transnational or comparative history, as well as the domestic impact of empire, are especially welcome. Teaching load is 2-2, and coverage of both 19th and 20th centuries is expected. Candidate should have Ph.D. by start of appointment in September 2008.

Psychology

Assistant Professor in Cognitive/Affective/Behavioral Neuroscience

Wellesley College Department of Psychology invites applications for a tenure-track first-level assistant professor position in behavioral neuroscience to begin July 2008. The teaching load is four courses per year, and will include a survey course in biological psychology, an advanced course in psychopharmacology, a seminar in the applicant's specialty area and introductory psychology or statistics. Other courses could include one or more of the following depending on the candidate's areas of expertise: emotion, behavior genetics, hormones, or sensation and perception. The ideal candidate would be an excellent teacher, and have a research program that could involve undergraduate students. The Wellesley Psychology Department is currently a 14-person department. Wellesley College is the top-rated women's college in the nation, with a very diverse student body, and is located 12 miles west of Boston.
