ARTICLES OF GOVERNMENT
ARTICLE VI. Assignments and Incomplete Work

Section 1

Instructors are expected to assign work in such a way that the time a student is required to spend on a course, for scheduled appointments and for preparation, shall not exceed eleven hours a week during the semester. For purposes of this section, the reading period is not considered part of the semester.

Section 2

Any major paper or exercise should be assigned at least three weeks before it is due.

Section 3. In Term Work

While classes are in session, a student who is unable to take a test or to complete an assignment on time is responsible for making arrangements with the instructor concerning the missed work. The instructor has the right to permit or refuse extensions on term time work. If such work is not completed by the last day of classes, and if the instructor has approved subsequent completion, the procedures for completing end of term work apply. (See Section 4.)

Section 4. End of Term Work

If a student's work in a course is unfinished at the close of a semester, the instructor will enter the notation "Incomplete" on the grade sheet, and the case will be considered by the Academic Review Board. All late term and final papers shall be submitted to the Registrar in person or by registered (not certified) mail.

A. Excused Incomplete Work. If a student is unable to complete work for a course because of dire emergency or illness, she should follow the reporting procedure outlined in Article V, Section 1, A, 3. She then should complete the work as quickly as possible and submit it to the Registrar. The Academic Review Board will consider her case. If the Board deems her explanation adequate, her work will be accepted without penalty.

Ordinarily, at least two of the examinations missed at the end of a semester must be taken at the beginning of the following semester. (See Article V, Section 2.) Ordinarily, missed papers must be handed in by the beginning of the semester following that in which the Incomplete was received, or according to a schedule prescribed by the Academic Review Board.

B. Unexcused Incomplete Work. If a student's explanation for incomplete work is deemed inadequate by the Academic Review Board, or if a student fails to complete in term or end of term work by the end of the examination period, the instructor may submit the earned grade or a notation of "I" (incomplete). All incomplete work must be submitted no later than the first day of classes of the semester immediately following the semester in which the incomplete was recorded. This is the case whether or not the student is enrolled for that semester. Grades shall be due no later than October 1st for incompletes earned in the previous spring semester or March 1st for incompletes earned in the previous fall semester.

The notation of "I" will remain on the student's permanent record; the new grade will appear beside the "I." If no grade has been submitted in the stipulated time period, the "I" will be replaced by a permanent "INC" on the student's record. That course will not be considered as a unit attempted or completed in computing the grade point average.

C. The Academic Review Board will note cases where the number of Incompletes indicates a serious neglect of academic responsibilities on the part of a student.
