The Landscape

“ Wellesley College considers environmental sustainability to be an important component of its core mission. As part of this commitment, the college will consider sustainability as a factor in all institutional decisions. Members of the Wellesley community have individual and collective responsibility for environmental stewardship.”

As the landscape of Wellesley Campus plays a vital role in representing both the College and the College’s history, major renovations have occurred over the last 10 years to ensure its integrity for future generations. Guided by the 1998 Landscape Master Plan, significant portions of the College’s campus have been transformed by the renovation of the landscape and associated infrastructure with a re-centered focus on the primacy of the pedestrian. Sixty acres of the campus have under gone extensive renovation and /or restoration.

Paint Shop Pond
This project rescued 30 plus acres of contaminated and unusable land and cleaned up the northern cove ofLake Waban. Previously one of the most contaminated sites in Massachusetts, the successful remediation of this land allowed for the creation of much-needed playing fields and a track. The northern cove of Lake Waban was restored to its current pristine state and 7.5 acres of wetlands were recreated, representing a 30% increase in wetland area. The clean-up and replanting of Paint Shop Pond transformed unusable land into healthy and viable habitats for numerous species of fish, amphibians, and other wildlife.

Wang Campus Center

The new campus center employs efficient mechanical systems to provide for proper heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). The design of the building allows for extensive utilization of natural light, even in Tishman Commons on the lower level of the north side of the building. The green roof, visible from the 4th floor dining area, regulates the building’s temperature, lowering heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. Many of the floors in this building utilize bamboo—one of the most sustainable woods available. Further, this building is maintained by a custodial staff using only environmentally friendly cleaning products and methods.

Green Roofs

In addition to the green roof at the Campus Center, green roofs have also been installed at the Davis Parking Facility, the water treatment facility, the number six oil vault/tanks and above a large transformer vault at the Central Utility Plant.
