The Office of Advising and Academic Support Services brings together a range of resources to assist all Wellesley students in meeting their academic and personal goals. The office includes the Class Deans for each of the four Wellesley classes as well as the advising and student support resources included in the Pforzheimer Learning and Teaching Center. The Office works closely with other groups in the Division of Student Life as well as with faculty and staff across the campus to help each Wellesley student make the most of her time here. John O’Keefe serves as Director of the Office, as well as Dean for the Class of 2008 (A-K). As Director, he is responsible for overall coordination of the work of the Class Deans office with a range of support services available to students. As a Class Dean, John participates in that work directly, advising second year students on the academic and personal questions that come up during a Wellesley career. In collaboration with faculty, the Class Deans serve as the point persons for students' overall advising needs. The Dean of First-Year Students advises each group of incoming students on academic, social and personal issues arising from the transition from high school to college. After the first year at Wellesley College, traditional-age students are guided by one dean from the beginning of their sophomore year through graduation. The junior and senior Class Deans also advise non-traditional-age students known as Davis Scholars. The long-term tenure of a Class Dean with her class provides systematic overall advising that encompasses the range of developmental and academic issues students confront each year. These issues include choosing a major, deciding whether to stay at Wellesley or to study elsewhere in the junior year, connecting the undergraduate liberal arts experience with possible careers, and defining an education in the context of personal and moral development.
