Important Offices in Other Divisions

Counseling Services (Stone Center)

Counseling Services promotes the growth and well being of students. They approach their work from a belief that personal history and the larger social, cultural and physical environment affects one's personal development. Counseling Services believe that the capacity to explore personal concerns or feelings, whether they are large or small, is a sign of strength and all concerns are treated with respect. Counseling Services staff are available weekdays throughout the academic year and provide a counselor-on-call seven days a week when classes are in session. In addition to individual counseling, Counseling Services offers workshops and groups to serve student needs.

The Counseling Services is pleased to announce that we are now offering the Screening for Mental Health Online Screening Program to the Wellesley College community. The tool provides online screening for depression, alcohol, anxiety and eating disorders. It is free and anonymous and is being provided so that users can find out, in a private and confidential manner, whether professional support would be helpful. For more information and/or to access the screening tool, click here (this link can only be accessed by on-campus computers).

Parents may also access a Tips for Parents handout on the Counseling Services site.

Robin Cook-Nobles is the Director of Counseling Services.

The Health Service

The goal of The Health Service is to make good health a lifelong pursuit by providing medical care to those currently enrolled and by providing education regarding healthy lifestyles, prevention of disease and injury, management of chronic illness or disability.

To be a successful health care model in the context of the Wellesley College community, The Health Service professionals recognize the need to provide treatment as expeditiously as possible so that disruption of student life is minimized. They are also committed to the integrity of all students as individuals and seek to provide care in a manner that is respectful of each person's background and culture.

The Health Service consists of a licensed infirmary and an outpatient clinic designed to provide primary medical and gynecological care for students. While school is in session, The Health Service is staffed by registered nurses 24 hours per day and by physicians and/or nurse practitioners during clinic hours. A physician is on-call for emergencies at other hours.

The experienced staff is sensitive to the health needs of young women, and their goal is not only to care for students when they are ill, but also to educate and assist in appropriate self-care and health maintenance. When necessary, referrals are made to physicians or hospitals locally or in the Boston area.

The Health Service provides to students clinical services such as general medicine, allergy injections, immunizations, medical clearances, women's health, treatment of injury, confidential HIV testing, laboratory services, nutrition, health education, travel advice and medication prophylaxis. Vanessa Britto is the Director of The Health Service.

Health Education

The Health Education Office supports the mission of The Health Service by providing education and outreach on campus to promote healthy lifestyles and to prevent disease. The office's main goal is to provide students with information on health issues that affect women and to encourage students to make choices that enhance well-being. Students are encouraged to become familiar with the concept of self-care; that is, knowing how to take responsibility for one's own health, learning how to prevent common illnesses (i.e. colds), and knowing when to seek professional help.

The Director of Health Education, Catherine Collins, presents and coordinates programs in the residence halls, for cultural groups and for the entire community. Programs focus on the following topics: healthy eating habits, body image, eating concerns, stress reduction, breast health, AIDS/HIV, sexually transmitted infections, contraception, alcohol, drugs and smoking. Workshops on specific health topics for the First-Year Mentors and the Residential Life staff are presented during their yearly training sessions.

Health Reps (the health representatives) and the Sexual Health Peer Educators (SHEs) are student groups trained and supervised by the Director of Health Education. Residence hall members elect the Health Reps in the spring. Their role is to provide general health information to students in the residence halls. In addition, they are responsible for organizing health-related programs in the residence halls. The SHEs provide programs and organize campus-wide events about relationships, intimacy, sexually transmitted infections, contraception, HIV/AIDS and sexual health resources.

A Resource Room is located in The Health Service next to the waiting room. Students may borrow books or relaxation tapes. They may also take any of the available brochures and information sheets.
