The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures strongly encourages students to study abroad during their time at Wellesley. Students may choose from a variety of summer or year-long programs. Limited funding for summer study is available by application to the Mayling Soong Foundation (see the First-Class conference for information, deadlines, and application forms). Grants support the study of Chinese in China and Taiwan and Japanese in Japan only at designated programs (see below). Applicants must have completed one year of language study at Wellesley. Grants for the study of Korean language in Korea will not be available until after Korean language instruction has begun at Wellesley. Contact EALL for further information.

Study Abroad Programs - CHINA (PRC) and TAIWAN (ROC)

Wellesley Summer Intensive Program in China (MSF approved for summer study)

What: The Chinese Program offers an intensive four-week summer program in Shanghai, China. Any student who has completed two years of Chinese language training at Wellesley College may apply. The program focuses on intermediate level spoken Mandarin and cultural understanding. Small group classes are taught collaboratively by Wellesley College faculty and local college faculty, supplemented by one-to-one tutorials. Special lectures and weekend group trips to historic and cultural sites are arranged.

CET - Beijing Chinese Language Program (MSF approved for summer study)

What: Based in one of China's most dynamic cities (and the home of "standard" Chinese), the CET Beijing program immerses students in local Chinese life. Students have the opportunity to live with Chinese roommates from local universities and enroll in innovative language courses that challenge their skills both inside and outside the classroom. The programs unique activities further capitalize on Beijing 's rich learning environment and show students a side of China not seen by tourists.

CET - Harbin

What: Open to qualified students who have had a minimum of two years of college-level Chinese or the equivalent, the CET Chinese Language Program in Harbin is designed specifically for high intermediate and advanced students and gives them the challenge and flexibility they need in language learning. In addition to attending small language classes, students help design their own Chinese tutorials, conducted as private sessions between each student and his/her professor. This individualized attention makes it possible for advanced students with varying levels of fluency to significantly improve their own proficiency.

CET - Hangzhou Immersion Summer Chinese Language Program (formerly CET Nanjing Immersion Summer Chinese Language Program) (MSF approved for summer study)

What: CET's Hangzhou Immersion Summer Chinese Language Program will be based at CET's center at Zhejiang University of Technology, which houses the C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in China throughout the academic year. A recently renovated dormitory, along with ZUT's library, cafeterias and newly completed gymnasium offer students ideal facilities for language study. Outside of the classroom, students can take advantage of the environment that this famous Chinese city provides, including mountains, museums, temples and the beautiful West Lake . This intensive lanuage program is designed for graduates, professionals, and serious undergraduates.  The six-week program requires a minimum of three semesters of college level Chinese or the equivalent.

CET - C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in China

What: School in China is a unique immersion program designed specifically to provide advanced-intermediate and advanced students the kind of challenge and flexibility they need. Students follow an individualized curriculum, including a one-on-one tutorial, in part designed by the student, and a specialized drill session with one other student and one instructor. Students live with a Chinese roommate. The program requires that students speak Chinese at all times. Applicants must have completed a minimum of four semesters of college-level Chinese. Five to six semesters of Chinese are preferred. Students considered to need further preparation before enrolling in the School in China may be required to enroll in the 9-week Chinese School summer session on the Middlebury campus. All students are expected to enroll in a Chinese course the semester preceding the term or year abroad.

Princeton-in-Beijing (MSF approved for summer study)

What: Princeton-in-Beijing is an intensive summer program in intermediate and advanced Chinese language for the serious language student. The program's "total immersion" approach includes: a student pledge to speak no language other than Mandarin Chinese throughout the session; individual tutorial sessions in the afternoons; contact with faculty at meals and in campus life; and special lectures on aspects of China studies.

Associated Colleges in China (ACC) (MSF approved for summer study)

What: The ACC curriculum focuses on studying the Chinese language through individualized instruction with a high level of participation and interaction. The curriculum is designed so that the material taught in the classroom can be used outside of the classroom. Students are encouraged to interact with local Chinese citizens in order to increase their understanding of Chinese culture and society and to practice language skills learned in the classroom. ACC is a language-intensive program with an extremely rigorous schedule. Students should expect to spend most of their time with the program attending classes, completing assignments, and studying. Strict attendance policies and the language pledge are upheld by professors and by the Field Director.

The Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University (IUP) (MSF approved for summer study)

What: The Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies (IUP), formerly known as the 'Stanford Center', is now located in Beijing on the campus of Tsinghua (Qinghua) University. IUP was originally established in Taipei, Taiwan in 1963 and in 1997 relocated to its current site in Beijing . IUP's mission is to raise students' Chinese language proficiency to a level at which they can function independently in professional or academic careers. Prerequisites for IUP's admissions committee to review an application included the equivalent of two academic years of college-level Mandarin.

International Chinese Language Program (ICLP) (MSF approved for summer study)

What: ICLP enables students to achieve broad and independent competence in spoken Chinese and to develop reading skills needed for academic research or other professional use. The language center has an audio-visual room, reference library and computer lab with full Internet access for the use of students. Located on the campus of National Taiwan University (NTU), it enjoys the benefits of a central location in Taipei along with access to the full range of NTU's resources.

What: The Center for Chinese Language and Culture Studies (CCLC) is located at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan . Study Abroad Year Programs - JAPAN

Associated Kyoto Program (AKP)

What: An enriching, rigorous two-semester program in the ancient capital of Kyoto for students from 13 sponsoring institutions. In conjunction with Doshisha University , the program provides an opportunity for students to study Japanese language and related courses in the humanities and the social sciences, while living with a homestay family in the Kyoto area. Students are encouraged to participate in travel and cultural activities.
Where: Kyoto (Doshisha University consists of 2 campuses, the Imadegawa campus between the Imperial Palace and the Shokokuji Zen monastery in north-central Kyoto and the newly constructed campus at Shin-Tanabe, south of the city. The AKP offices, library, and computer facilities are located on the Imadegawa campus. Classes meet on Imadegawa campus and at Shinmachi (5 minute walk away).

Japan Women's University (JWU)

What: A challenging total-immersion year-long exchange program between Wellesley College and Japan Women's University, which is located in the heart of Tokyo. In addition to a versatile liberal arts curriculum with a strong emphasis on Japanese studies, the university also offers a wide range of club and extracurricular activities. Students also have the opportunity to take courses at the co-educational Waseda University. Students choose home stay or dormitory option.

Scholarships - JAPAN

Bridging Scholarships

What: The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project accepts applications from American students participating in study abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major US corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award up to 30 scholarships to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be enrolled in a college or university in the U.S.
Award: $2,500 Stipend for students on semester programs, and $4,000 Stipend for students on academic year programs. Students attending programs at four-year Japanese universities may also be eligible for a supplementary monthly stipend from the Japanese government through the Association for International Education, Japan (AIEJ).

Monbusho Scholarships

What: The Monbusho Japanese Studies award is offered by the Japanese government. The award is designed for undergraduate students who are specializing in Japanese language or culture and wish to pursue their studies in Japan. The term of stay is one academic year, beginning in September or October and ending the following year. All applicants are required to take a Japanese language examination and complete an interview.
Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, between the ages of 18 and 29, and must be undergraduate students studying Japanese language or culture at an institution outside of Japan. Applicants should have knowledge of the Japanese language.
Award: Grant includes round trip airfare, exemption from all school fees, arrival allowance of 25,000 yen and a stipend of 142,500 yen per month.

Study Abroad Year Program—KOREA

Ewha Woman’s University

What: One or two semester-long "International Exchange and Study Abroad Program" for exchange and visiting students between Wellesley College and Ewha Woman’s University, which is located in the heart of Seoul. This program has been established for students who are interested in a wide-range of studies, including topics on Asia and Korea, and it is open to undergraduate and graduate students from any accredited institution of higher education. Students have the option to study for one or two semesters at Ewha as a non-degree seeking student. All international students enrolled in the program may register in any of the courses offered by Ewha, either in English or Korean, depending on their language proficiency.

Internships

Students interested in pursuing summer internships in Asia are encouraged to apply for a Luce Summer internship during their sophomore or junior year. These internships aim to prepare students for lives and careers in a global economy. Students may intern in business, government, and not-for-profit organizations in China, Hong Kong,
Japan, and Korea. Applications are due in December.

The Center for Work and Service (CWS) offers internship stipends to students who have located internships in not-for-profit, for-profit, and government organizations. Applications for all programs are due in March and may be
