A Day of Travel

Hong Kong International Airport

I got to the airport early & had little trouble cleaning security. After security, one enters a combined waiting area and modern (very modern) shopping area, including the food court pictured above. The waiting areas are well appointed with comfortable chairs. Would that all airport were like this.

The Dragonair, , flight is packed & the food is terrible. Still, we get to Shanghai's Pudong airport safely.

No problem getting through customs or getting Renminbi (RMB) (Chinese currency) at the ATM. The airport is much quieter than Hong Kong's and certainly doesn't have the air of commerce gone wild, but it is modern and very nice.

Pudong International Airport

As I am waiting for my luggage, I spy a second floor restaurant overlooking baggage claim where everyone looks happy & relaxed. After clearing custom's, I head for the restaurant. It turns out to be a combined tea shop, fast food joint and nice bar. I order a pot of rosebud tea & stake out my territory to wait for the Wellesley delegation to arrive.I stared at the following scene for about three hours.

When I see the Wellesley group waiting for their luggage, I go down and find a delegation from East China Normal University (ECNU) and Charles Bu waiting for the group. We are taken care of very well .

We are bused to ECNU & the hotel has a stir fried spaghetti dish with greens and soup waiting for us. By now it is around 11:30. We stagger off to our rooms. The rooms are academic Spartan, but quite comfortable. One unusual feature is that you have to put your key in a receptacle by the door to get electricity.

Here is  Beth Hennessey's picture of the entrance to the hotel. That is Barbara Beatty waving.
