"The
most subscribed courses at Wellesley during 1890-1910 were in
the English Department. Whereas at Harvard philological analysis
and linguistics made up the 'steel core work' of the department,
at Wellesley the concentration was on intellectual and social
themes in literature, reflecting the humanistic approach that
many of the faculty had learned as graduate students at Oxford.
Under the inspired direction of Katharine Lee Bates, who taught
at Wellesley from 1885 to 1925, English literature courses...
involved textual analysis mixed with critical social commentary
or stressed creative writing. The fact that more than half of
the members of the department were poets added to its distinctive
style."
In Adamless Eden: The Community of Women Faculty at Wellesley,
Patricia Ann Palmieri (1995).
