Internships: Summer 2008
The English Department and the Writing Program are happy to announce three sponsored internships for the summer of 2008 in the fields of print and online journalism. Each full-time internship carries a stipend of $3500. Students may apply for more than one internship, but should indicate choices and notice the locations and differences in emphasis in the three.

Editorial internship at the Boston Review. The Boston Review is a prestigious, fast-growing national magazine of politics, culture, and the arts. The editorial internship includes copy editing, fact-checking, proofreading, and desktop publishing, for which training is provided. Other responsibilities include screening submissions, summarizing and proposing books for review, corresponding with authors, updating the magazine’s Web site, and maintaining a database of writers and other contacts. Boston Review’s small office gives interns a good opportunity to be involved in nearly every aspect of magazine publishing. Applicants are advised to familiarize themselves with the magazine by reading some issues. Open to sophomores and juniors.

Editorial internship at AGNI Magazine. AGNI is a prize-winning literary journal, published at Boston University. It features fiction, poetry, and essays by both established and new writers. The semi-annual print journal now has an electronic component. AGNI also sponsors significant programs of literary readings in the Boston area. As with the Boston Review, AGNI’s small office gives interns a good opportunity to be involved in nearly every aspect of magazine publishing: copyediting, corresponding with authors, work on the magazines’ website AGNI Online, database management and other tasks. Applicants are advised to familiarize themselves with the magazine by reading some issues. Open to sophomores and juniors.

Editorial internship at Slate. Slate is the nation's leading electronic magazine, featuring articles concerning political, cultural, legal, and social issues on a daily basis. This internship will be located in the Washington D.C. office of Slate. The intern will work directly with the medical and legal editor, and also do general intern work for the Washington office. Responsibilities would include: research and fact checking, the writing of "Related in Slate" (the list of other Slate articles at the end of each piece), with other writing opportunities available for an intern with demonstrated skills. Applicants are advised to familiarize themselves with the magazine and be prepared to work in a dynamic, fast-moving environment. Open to juniors and seniors.

Applications will require the following:
1) A cover letter explaining why you would like to participate in the internship, and your relevant skills, interests, and experience.
2) Your c.v. or resume.
3) An official Wellesley transcript.
4) The name of a Wellesley faculty member who has agreed to serve as a reference.
5) A short writing sample that you think best represents your writing skills.
6) Applications for the Boston Review internship must include a supplementary page listing four favorite books and a brief description of why you admire two of them.

Completed applications will be due March 5 in the English Department Office.

Questions about these internships may be directed to Lisa Rodensky (lrodensk@wellesley.edu) in the English Department.
