About the Department

The Department of French is one of the larger departments at Wellesley, with about 30 majors each year. The department administers a program for juniors in Aix-en-Provence, France, and the French House, a residence for students.

Beginning classes utilize "French in Action," a series of videotaped materials, prepared by Wellesley College, Yale University, and Public Television. All courses are conducted in French, and courses at all levels draw on Wellesley's Knapp Media Center. Students may choose from over 30 courses, including: Perspectives on French Culture and Society; Saint-Germain-des-Prés; Versailles and the Age of Louis XIV; Images of Women in French Film; and Women, Language, and Literary Expression.
