FRENCH 206 Intermediate Spoken French
Practice in conversation, using a variety of materials including newspaper articles, radio and television broadcasts, advertisements and films. This course is designed to develop oral proficiency with necessary attention to the other skills - listening comprehension, reading, and writing. Regular use of the language laboratory. Prerequisite: 202 or 203, an SAT II score of 650-680, an equivalent departmental placement score, or an AP score of 4
Throughout the semester, special attention is given to the idiomatic expressions, forms of speech and pronunciation. Practice of French phonetics is emphasized through individual work in the Knapp Center, classtime and individual meetings with the French assistantes. Contemporary French culture is analyzed through various media. In addition to the reading and study of current magazine articles, extensive use is made of French films, songs, interviews, radio and French news broadcasts, advertisements and websites. Class time is entirely devoted to conversation and a wide variety of activities is proposed to increase students’ vocabulary, improve pronunciation, fluency and comprehension. At the end of the course, students’ oral and listening skills are substantially developed.
