"Professor Meg Thompson, after serving in the Geology - Geosciences Department since 1976, retired in June of 2008. She maintains a small and unique office and will be continuing her research into the history of the Avalon plate on which Boston sits. She was elected as a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and will be serving as an Associate Editor of the Geological Society of America Bulletin for the next several years. We wish her well in her new endeavors.",
"We are pleased to announce the appointment of David Hawkins as a new Associate Professor of Geosciences. Dave finished his Doctorate from MIT in 1996, and comes to us after teaching at Franklin & Marshall, Colorado College, and most recently at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. His interest in longevity and dynamics of rhyolite magma systems has focussed on work in collaboration with Bob Wiebe in the coastal Maine plutons, and was active in the Keck Geology Consortium program. He expects to continue his collaboration with the Bowring geochronology lab at MIT, and is looking forward to renewing his acquaintance with Boston-area rocks. During the fall semester, he will be teaching Structural Geology.",
"We are happy to welcome back Maria Waller, who was our sole laboratory instructor for a few years in the 1990's. While raising her two sons, she has been active in the Natick community, recently serving as President of the League of Women Voters. She has now returned half-time to work with Becky Mattison and Kathy Gilbert in staffing our introductory geoscience labs. With two sections in the fall and two in the spring, we will now be teaching five labs and two lecture sections each semester."]
