WINTERSESSION IN VIENNA, JANUARY 2009

GERMAN 202W:
Intermediate German in Vienna
German Language and Culture taught in Vienna, Austria
(1.0 credit)
Mr. Nolden (German)

The German Department is pleased to offer this educational opportunity in January 2009. This course will be taught by Professor Thomas Nolden of the German Department and will provide an intensive language experience, which includes daily classroom instruction in Intermediate German as well as an exploration of the daily life, history, and culture of this European metropolis with special emphasis on its rich history. Students earn 1.0 unit of credit for this course as they would when they take German 202 on campus.

In addition to the regular language instruction in German 202W, that is equivalent to 202 on campus, the course differs from the on-campus version by taking advantage of the immediate cultural context available to us on site in Vienna. In 2009, the cultural component of the course will explore Vienna’s legacy as a policical and cultural capital with a rich artistic heritage. The course will include a number of mandatory cultural site visits.

The program fee for this course is $ 3650.00. Financial aid is available to students currently eligible for financial aid. Packages will be a loan/grant combination, and all will have a $750 loan component. The amount of the grant will depend on the level of your current aid. Aid will be offered by Student Financial Services, Financial Aid Office, not by the German Department, and all financial information will he kept confidential.

Applicants should contact Prof. Nolden to receive the application materials for this program and visit the wintersession web page of Wellesley's Office of International Studies for general eligibility policies..

GERMAN 202 WS combines two elements:

Intermediate German
Like 202 on campus, this course strengthens and expands all language skills with special emphasis on idiomatic usage by means of grammar review, oral and listening practice, readings on contemporary and historical topics, and practice in composition. As an intensive course, Ger 202W is very demanding in terms of the time and effort needed to succeed. The program includes classroom instruction and assignments linked to cultural experiences.

In addition to the Intermediate German immersion program, this course has an important cultural component which in 2008 will focus on Vienna's important historical, political, and cultural presence throughout the centuries. In the course of our exploration we shall visit fascinating museums, sites of specific historical significance, and attend related cultural events. More information will be made available at a later point of time.

By taking this intensive course in Vienna, students accelerate their language studies. As a result students can take more advanced German language and culture/literature courses in the spring semester. After completing 233, 236 or 239, students are well prepared for a semester or year of study at the University of Vienna in our regular study abroad program during their junior year. We are therefore particularly interested in affording students who wish to continue with German to have this opportunity to accelerate.

The program fee of $3,650 will cover the following costs: airfare (Boston-Vienna and return) and airport transfers,as well as the following costs in Vienna: room & board, city transportation, museum and other entrance fees, and required group cultural outings.

Please keep in mind that students will also need some pocket money for personal expenses.

In Vienna we are housed and have classroom space in the Pallottihaus, an attractive, modern guesthouse near Schönbrunn Palace in the Hietzing district, convenient to public transportation.

The group will leave together from Boston Logan Airport for Vienna, most likely on January 6. (The first day of wintersession is January 5, 2009, at which point Wellesley's dormitories will already be open). The group will be back on campus from Vienna on January 20, 2009, and the wintersession course will meet for several mandatory class meetings on campus before wintersession ends on January 26. The exact departure and return dates and times will be announced as soon as our plane reservations are secured, but students must plan now to be back on campus on the first day of wintersession for a mandatory class meeting in the afternoon to prepare for the common departure for Vienna on the following day.

Application materials can be obtained by contacting Prof. Thomas Nolden in the German department.

Application deadline: Friday, October 10, 2008.
